An extraordinary heat wave warning for Southern California is sending alarm bells across the region as meteorologists warn that a rare surge of summer-like heat will grip the area for several days, potentially rewriting long-standing temperature records.

Forecasters say the coming stretch of heat could feel more like July than March, turning coastal breezes into warm gusts and pushing inland valleys into triple-digit territory.

“Extremely Rare Heat for March,” Weather Service Warns

The National Weather Service says the historic event will begin Tuesday and could persist in some locations until Friday.

Officials described the incoming temperatures as “extremely rare heat for March,” warning that the region may experience its hottest March stretch in decades.

Meteorologists noted that numerous daily temperature records are expected to fall, while some monthly high records could also be broken.

If projections hold, this could mark the hottest March period since 1988 across parts of the region.

Hottest Days Expected Midweek

Weather experts say the most intense heat will arrive in the middle of the week.

“Tuesday and Wednesday will be the hottest days of this historic heat event,” the Weather Service said in its forecast.

Along the coast of Southern California, temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 80s and 90s.

Further inland, valleys could sizzle to 103 degrees, a blistering reading for early spring.

On Wednesday, temperatures will remain largely unchanged, though some coastal areas may see slight cooling from ocean breezes.

Advisories and Heat Watches Issued

As the heat wave warning for Southern California intensifies, forecasters have issued multiple alerts to prepare residents.

A Heat Advisory is scheduled to take effect across much of coastal California at 10 a.m. Monday.

In addition, an Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for large sections of the region and is expected to remain in place through Friday.

Meteorologists warn that prolonged exposure to the heat could create dangerous conditions, especially for vulnerable populations.

San Fernando Valley Could Top 100 Degrees

One of the most dramatic temperature spikes is expected in the San Fernando Valley, where forecasters say the mercury could surge past 100 degrees.

Such temperatures would be extraordinary for March, a time when the region typically enjoys mild spring weather.

Normally, daytime highs across Southern California hover comfortably in the 70s during March.

This week, however, temperatures could soar 25 to 35 degrees above normal.

Scientists Call It a “Summer Heatwave in March”

Climate and weather researchers say the event is highly unusual.

Weather scientist Daniel Swain described the upcoming pattern as an exceptional and long-lasting heat event affecting much of the U.S. Southwest.

“All signs continue to point to an exceptional, long-duration, and record-breaking to record-shattering March heatwave,” Swain wrote on social media.

The phenomenon, he added, is “effectively a full-on summer heatwave in March.”

Heat Dome Expands Across the Southwest

While Southern California sits at the center of the forecast, the unusual warmth is expected to expand across broader areas of the Southwest.

Meteorologists say the atmospheric pattern resembles a heat dome, trapping hot air over the region and allowing temperatures to build day after day.

For residents accustomed to cool Pacific breezes and mild spring afternoons, the shift may feel abrupt—like stepping from spring directly into midsummer.
