Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose unmistakable raspy voice powered some of the biggest rock ballads of the 1970s and 1980s, has died at the age of 75. Tributes from fellow musicians, actors, and fans around the world poured in following the news.

The three-time Grammy nominee died unexpectedly at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, after complications from an illness for which she had been receiving treatment.

Tyler's manager, Matt Davis, confirmed her death in a statement, saying her family and team were "heartbroken" by the loss. Her passing came just weeks after she underwent emergency intestinal surgery and spent a month in a medically induced coma. Although she regained consciousness in June, she remained critically ill before her death.

Bonnie Tyler had a Remarkable Career

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Neath Port Talbot, Wales, Bonnie Tyler grew up in a working-class family with a love for music. Inspired by artists such as Janis Joplin and Tina Turner, she began performing in local clubs before adopting the stage name Bonnie Tyler in the mid-1970s.

Her breakthrough came with the 1976 single "Lost in France," but international stardom arrived two years later with "It's a Heartache." The song became a global hit, reaching the Top Five in the United States and topping charts in several countries.

Tyler's signature husky voice became one of the most recognizable in popular music. Ironically, that distinctive sound emerged after surgery to remove vocal cord nodules in the late 1970s.

Doctors instructed her not to speak while recovering, but an accidental shout permanently altered her voice, creating the raspy style that became her trademark.

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" Became a Global Phenomenon

Tyler achieved worldwide superstardom in 1983 with "Total Eclipse of the Heart," written and produced by Jim Steinman.

The dramatic power ballad spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts around the globe. It became one of the defining songs of the 1980s and has remained a cultural phenomenon for decades, frequently returning to streaming charts during solar eclipses.

Its elaborate music video became an early MTV classic, while the song itself has accumulated well over one billion streams across digital platforms.

Tyler followed that success with another enduring hit, "Holding Out for a Hero," which became synonymous with films, television, commercials, and sporting events. Other popular recordings included "Straight from the Heart," "Faster Than the Speed of Night," and numerous chart successes throughout Europe.

Bonnie Tyler had Health Struggles in Her Final Months

In May, Tyler was rushed to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where doctors performed emergency intestinal surgery.

Following the procedure, physicians placed her in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery. Her family later announced that she had awakened but remained seriously ill.

Despite hopes that she would recover, Tyler died on July 8 while receiving treatment in Portugal. Her family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Family, Friends, and Fellow Stars Pay Tribute

Among the first celebrities to honor Tyler was actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, whose family shared a close personal connection with the singer. Tyler's husband, Robert Sullivan, was a cousin of Zeta-Jones' father, and Tyler performed at the actress's wedding to Michael Douglas.

"My heart is broken," Zeta-Jones wrote on Instagram.

She described Tyler as "an extraordinary woman with vocals to match" and praised not only her remarkable singing ability but also her sense of humor.

"Thank you, Bonnie, for the joy you brought so many," she wrote.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis also expressed her sadness, noting that Tyler's signature hit, "Total Eclipse of the Heart," appeared prominently in the 2024 film The Last Showgirl.

Canadian rocker Bryan Adams thanked Tyler for recording his song "Straight from the Heart," calling her voice unforgettable.

Meanwhile, British music legend Cliff Richard remembered Tyler as a "wonderful friend" whose enthusiasm for life touched audiences around the world.

Bonnie Tyler Left a Lasting Legacy

Throughout her career, Tyler received three Grammy Award nominations and sold millions of albums worldwide.

She represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Believe in Me," introducing her music to a new generation of fans.

In 2022, Tyler was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to music, recognizing a career that spanned nearly five decades.

Although musical trends changed over the years, Tyler continued touring internationally and recording new music well into the 2020s, maintaining a devoted fan base across Europe, North America, and Australia.

Her powerful voice, emotional performances, and timeless catalog ensured that songs like "It's a Heartache," "Holding Out for a Hero," and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" remain staples of classic rock radio and popular culture.

Bonnie Tyler is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973. Though she is gone, her music continues to resonate with generations of listeners around the world.
