Equifax $2.2M Settlement: Are You Owed Up to $600?

Equifax $2.2m settlement

Imagine glancing at your credit report and finding a debt listed not once, but twice — as if the same bill had been photocopied and slipped back into your file to make your finances look worse than reality. That's precisely what happened to thousands of Americans in 2022, and now it's about to cost Equifax millions. If you were caught in the middle of the credit bureau's double-reporting error, you could be entitled to a slice of the newly finalized Equifax $2.2m settlement.

The Case That Started With a Complaint

Duplicates That Inflated Debt

Filed at the end of 2022, the class action lawsuit Bradberry v. Equifax Information Services LLC accused the credit reporting giant of "wrongfully reporting duplicates of negative accounts" — a glitch that made collection balances appear larger than they truly were. It's a bit like a grocery store scanner ringing up the same item twice at checkout, except here the inflated total could follow someone for years, quietly shaping loan approvals and interest rates.

The lawsuit alleged Equifax violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a law requiring credit bureaus to maintain reasonable procedures to ensure the accuracy of the information they report. Rather than fight the case out in court, Equifax agreed to a $2.2 million settlement, which has since received preliminary court approval.

Not Equifax's First Rodeo

This isn't the company's first brush with a massive class-action payout. Back in 2017, a catastrophic data breach forced Equifax to pay a staggering $650 million — a figure that dwarfs the current settlement but underscores a pattern of costly missteps for the credit reporting giant.

Who Qualifies for a Payout

The Fine Print That Determines Eligibility

Roughly 37,000 people were affected by this particular reporting error, but not everyone in that group automatically qualifies for compensation. To be eligible, you must meet two specific criteria:

  • You received a "Duplicate Reporting Letter" from Equifax between August and September 2022, containing a Notice ID and PIN.
  • You currently reside in the United States or one of its territories.

How to Claim Your Share

Filing Online or by Mail

Eligible claimants can head to the Equifax duplicate-account settlement website and register using the Notice ID and PIN provided in their letter. Prefer paper over pixels? A downloadable claim form is also available for those who'd rather mail in their submission. Payment options include PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, a virtual prepaid card, or a traditional check — giving claimants flexibility in how they receive their money.

The Clock Is Ticking

Mark your calendar: the deadline to submit a claim is September 1, 2026. But filing alone isn't enough — claimants must also prove one of two things: that Equifax sent a credit report to a third party showing a duplicated collection amount, or that the duplicate account was a factor in a credit denial.

Final Approval Still Pending

A final case approval hearing is scheduled for October 6, 2026, and payments won't be released until the court grants final sign-off and any appeals are resolved. It's a bit like waiting for a check to clear before you can spend it — the settlement exists, but the money isn't moving just yet.

What You Could Actually Receive

Those who file a valid claim could receive up to $600, though the final payout amount will hinge on how many valid claims are submitted and what remains after administrative costs are deducted. In other words, the more people who file, the smaller each individual slice of the pie may become.

A Bonus Beyond the Cash

Free Monitoring for Everyone Affected

Here's the twist: whether or not you file a claim, if you were impacted by the double-reporting error, you'll automatically receive six months of Equifax Complete credit monitoring. That includes credit report and score tracking, real-time alerts, and up to $500,000 in coverage for identity-theft-related expenses — a safety net stitched in regardless of whether you chase the cash.

The Bigger Lesson

While no one can prevent every data breach or reporting glitch before it happens, staying vigilant with a reliable identity theft monitoring service can help you catch problems early — before a duplicated debt or stolen identity has time to snowball into a much bigger headache.
