LAS VEGAS — Tupac Shakur, the 25-year-old superstar was riding in a BMW along a Las Vegas street when gunfire erupted Sept. 7, 1996. The rapper was one of the most influential figures in hip-hop at that time.
Nearly three decades later, the long-unsolved murder of Tupac Shakur has returned to the courtroom, where Duane “Keffe D” Davis is facing trial in connection with the killing.
Jury selection began Monday in Las Vegas in the murder case against Davis, 63, the only person ever charged in Shakur’s death. Davis has pleaded not guilty to murder with a deadly weapon and has denied being the person who fired the fatal shots.
Prosecutors allege Davis helped orchestrate the shooting as retaliation for a confrontation involving his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, earlier that night at the MGM Grand after a Mike Tyson boxing match.
The case has remained one of the most enduring mysteries in American music. Authorities spent years investigating the shooting without making an arrest.
The investigation eventually gained new momentum as Davis publicly discussed the killing in interviews, documentaries and a memoir about his life in the Southside Compton Crips.
A Night That Changed Hip-Hop History
About 10,000 people were inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sept. 7, 1996, watching Tyson fight Bruce Seldon. Shakur was among the celebrities attending the highly anticipated bout.
Tyson won by first-round knockout in just 109 seconds.
What happened afterward would become one of the most notorious episodes in music history.
Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight left the MGM Grand in a black BMW. Earlier, Shakur and members of his entourage had confronted Anderson, who was associated with the Southside Compton Crips.
Tupac Shakur Dies in Las Vegas
According to prosecutors, the confrontation became the catalyst for a retaliatory attack.
Authorities say Davis was riding in a white Cadillac with Anderson and two other men. The Cadillac eventually pulled alongside Knight’s BMW near the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane.
Gunfire erupted.
Shakur was struck four times. A bullet also grazed Knight, who was driving the BMW. Shakur suffered devastating injuries, including damage to his right lung.
He was taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he remained on life support for six days. On Sept. 13, 1996, Shakur died. He was 25.
Rising Rap Star Tupac Shakur Becomes Cultural Icon
Shakur's career had lasted only a few years, but his influence was already enormous.
Born in 1971, he developed an interest in poetry and performing arts before becoming one of the most recognizable voices in hip-hop. After moving to Northern California, he joined Digital Underground and eventually launched a solo career.
His 1991 album “2Pacalypse Now” addressed subjects including poverty, police brutality and violence. Later albums demonstrated a broader range, from the deeply personal “Dear Mama” to the darker reflections of “So Many Tears.”
Shakur also established himself as an actor, appearing in movies including “Juice,” “Poetic Justice” and “Above the Rim.” His work eventually earned him recognition beyond rap.
Tupac Shakur Left a Legacy of Both Violence and Fame
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Shakur in 2017, describing his music as a combination of intensity, vulnerability and social commentary. The institution says his recording career lasted only about five years but helped establish him as one of the most influential artists in music history.
His public image, however, became increasingly complicated.
Shakur was involved in numerous legal disputes and violent confrontations. He was convicted in New York of sexually abusing a woman and had previously been involved in other criminal cases.
He also became increasingly associated with Death Row Records and the increasingly bitter rivalry between West Coast and East Coast rap.
The East Coast-West Coast Rivalry
By the mid-1990s, the rivalry between Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records had become a defining conflict within hip-hop.
Shakur openly attacked Bad Boy artist Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G., and Bad Boy executive Sean “Puffy” Combs in his 1996 song “Hit ’Em Up.”
The rivalry was more than a disagreement over music. Gang affiliations, personal disputes and accusations of violence increasingly became intertwined with the business.
Shakur's relationship with Knight and Death Row placed him in an environment where the distinction between entertainment and street conflict could become difficult to separate.
Less than six months after Shakur's death, Wallace was also murdered in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. His killing remains unsolved, and no one has been charged.
The two deaths became symbols of a violent period in hip-hop history.
Davis Implicates Himself in 2019 Memoir
For years, investigators struggled to identify someone who could be prosecuted for Shakur's murder.
Potential witnesses were reluctant to cooperate, and investigators lacked the physical evidence necessary to make an arrest.
The breakthrough came largely because Davis began talking publicly about his involvement.
Davis described the night in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” and discussed the shooting in subsequent interviews and documentaries.
Investigators also obtained statements from Davis that prosecutors say helped establish his role in the events leading to the killing.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, are expected to rely heavily on Davis' own words.
Davis Claims He is Innocent
Authorities allege Davis obtained the firearm used in the shooting and handed it to someone in the back seat of the Cadillac.
Davis has disputed the prosecution's characterization of his statements and has argued that he did not write the book himself. His defense has emphasized that he was not the shooter.
A critical problem for prosecutors is that the suspected gunman was never charged.
Anderson, the man investigators have long considered a possible shooter, was killed in a gang-related shooting in Compton in 1998. Other occupants of the Cadillac are also dead.
That leaves Davis as the only surviving occupant of the vehicle and the only person ever charged in connection with Shakur's killing.
Prosecutors Say Tupac Shakur was Killed in a Conspiracy
Prosecutors do not allege that Davis personally pulled the trigger.
Instead, they contend he helped arrange the retaliation and provided the gun.
That distinction is expected to be central to the trial.
Davis has acknowledged being in the Cadillac but has offered varying accounts over the years about what happened inside the vehicle. In one interview, he indicated that Anderson was responsible for the shooting.
A Nevada judge ruled that certain recorded statements Davis made to law enforcement can be used at trial. The court also allowed prosecutors to use portions of his memoir and other public statements, despite defense objections.
The defense has argued that the suspect's statements should not be trusted and that the case lacks critical physical evidence, including the murder weapon.
The prosecution's case therefore rests in significant part on statements Davis made over many years to reconstruct the 1996 shooting.
Tupac Shakur: His Music Lives On
Shakur's death did not end his career.
His music continued to sell millions of records, and albums and recordings were released after his death. He became an enduring cultural figure whose songs continued to influence generations of performers.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame notes that Shakur's work combined confrontational rap with vulnerability and social commentary. His songs addressed violence, poverty, racism, family and the consequences of street life.
That contradiction remains at the center of his legacy.
Shakur could celebrate a hard-edged image while also writing emotionally vulnerable songs about his mother, his childhood and the people he had lost.
A Murder That Changed His Legacy
His death at 25 ultimately became another chapter in the violence he had spent much of his career describing.
Now, nearly 30 years after the gunfire on a Las Vegas street, the unanswered questions surrounding his death are finally being presented to a jury.
Davis has pleaded not guilty, and the prosecution must prove its allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. Jury selection began Aug. 10, 2026, with the case attracting renewed international attention because of Shakur's continuing influence on popular culture.
For fans who have spent decades debating who killed one of hip-hop's most important artists, the trial represents something that once seemed unlikely: an opportunity for the evidence surrounding Tupac Shakur's murder to finally be tested in court.
