What’s Open on Labor Day: A Guide to Weekend Shopping and Closures

what's open on labor day

Labor Day weekend has officially arrived, and whether you're racing to grab last-minute cookout supplies or hunting for a holiday sale, most of the retail and dining world will still be open for business Monday. A smaller handful of institutions, though, are punching out for the day entirely.

What's Closing for the Holiday

Banks and post offices will close their doors Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day, though the vast majority of major restaurant, grocery and retail chains plan to stay open and welcome shoppers as usual. The stock market will also sit closed for the day.

The Holiday's Origins

Labor Day traces back to Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, when New York City held the very first celebration. By 1894, 23 additional states had adopted the holiday of their own accord. That same year, on June 28, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making the first Monday of September a permanent national holiday.

Why the Holiday Exists

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday celebrates "the social and economic achievements of American workers," with roots stretching back to the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday "to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being."

This Year's Schedule

Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7 this year, with the broader holiday weekend spanning Saturday, Sept. 5 through Monday, Sept. 7. As always, it's worth double-checking with your local store or restaurant online before heading out, since hours and closures can vary considerably from one location to the next.

Mail and Package Delivery Pauses

Labor Day counts as an official U.S. Postal Service holiday, according to the agency's website, meaning mail won't be delivered and post offices will close for retail transactions on Sept. 7. UPS and FedEx will similarly suspend pickup and delivery services for the day — UPS Store locations may close entirely, according to the company's website, while FedEx Office locations will operate on modified hours.

Banking Hours Take a Pause Too

Since Labor Day is a federal holiday, most bank branches will close for the day. Consumers are encouraged to check with their specific local branch for exact holiday hours. ATMs and online banking will remain accessible throughout, though any transactions or deposits made may not actually process until the following business day.

Wall Street Takes the Day Off

U.S. stock markets will close entirely Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of the holiday. Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will remain shuttered Monday, reopening Tuesday, Sept. 8. The U.S. bond market will likewise close for the day, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Coffee, Groceries and Wholesale Clubs

Most Starbucks locations will remain open on Labor Day, though specific hours vary by store — the company recommends checking the Starbucks app for accurate hours at your nearest location.

Grocery chains largely plan to stay open as well, though some may run on limited hours. Kroger says on its website that its stores will maintain regular hours, though pharmacy and clinic hours may differ. Other major chains — including Walmart, Publix, Trader Joe's and Meijer — have traditionally stayed open through the holiday.

Wholesale Clubs Adjust Their Hours

Sam's Club warehouses will open at 8 a.m. for Plus members and 9 a.m. for standard Club members, closing at 8 p.m., according to the company's website. BJ's warehouses will run from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Labor Day, per the company's own posted hours.

Restaurants and Retailers Stay Open

Most major restaurant chains plan to remain open for the holiday, including McDonald's, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin and Wendy's, among others. As always, it's best to verify specific hours through each company's app or by contacting your nearest location directly.

On the retail side, most national chains will also stay open Monday, including Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, IKEA, Target, TJ Maxx and Bass Pro Shop, among others. Again, checking each retailer's app or calling ahead remains the safest way to confirm exact holiday hours before making the trip.
