DALLAS — Trump-a-Palooza is bringing Republicans from across the country to Dallas, Texas for an unusual two-day midterm convention. It's designed to energize voters, raise campaign money and promote President Donald Trump's record ahead of the Nov. 3 congressional elections.

The Republican National Committee is hosting the first ever midterm convention. It's scheduled for Sept. 9-10 at the American Airlines Center.

Trump is expected to headline both nights, with Vice President JD Vance and numerous administration officials, elected officials and candidates also scheduled to appear.

Republicans Point to Policies

The event represents an effort by Republican leaders to make the 2026 elections a referendum on Trump's administration while giving candidates in competitive races access to a national audience. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters has described the gathering as "Trump-a-Palooza."

The convention is also intended to provide Republicans with a major fundraising opportunity and a platform to promote administration policies on taxes, prescription drug prices, border security, trade and other issues.

The President Takes Center Stage at Trump-a-Palooza

Trump is scheduled to close out both nights of the convention, putting the president at the center of the party's midterm strategy.

Republican organizers say the event will showcase what they describe as accomplishments by the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Congress. Party officials also plan to argue that Democrats are increasingly aligned with the party's progressive and socialist wing.

The strategy comes as Republicans seek to overcome the historical tendency for the president's party to lose congressional seats during midterm elections. The GOP currently holds a narrow majority in the House, making competitive races especially important to the party's effort to retain control of Congress.

Trump has also encouraged Republican candidates to campaign on his administration's record rather than treat the midterms as separate local contests. The president has highlighted issues including economic investment, tax policy, prescription drug prices and immigration enforcement.

Trump-a-Palooza Creates Political Risk

The heavy emphasis on Trump, however, has generated concerns among some Republicans.

Political strategists have questioned whether putting the president at the center of the convention could make vulnerable candidates more closely associated with national controversies rather than local issues. The concern is particularly relevant in competitive districts and states where Republican candidates are attempting to appeal to voters who may have mixed views of the president.

The convention also faces competition from the opening week of the NFL season. The timing could make television audiences and media attention more difficult to capture, particularly during Trump's prime-time appearances.

The unusual format itself is part of the political calculation. Midterm conventions are rare, and Republicans are using the Dallas gathering to create a national event months before voters cast their ballots.

Texas Races Get National Attention

Texas is a central focus of the convention because of the state's competitive 2026 Senate race and several congressional contests.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is among the Republican figures appearing at the event as he campaigns for the Senate. Democrat James Talarico is challenging him in a race that has drawn national attention. The Texas Tribune reported that the convention is occurring during one of the state's most competitive election cycles in years.

Other Republican candidates in competitive races are also scheduled to appear, giving them an opportunity to introduce themselves to a national Republican audience and appeal to donors.

Some Republicans have chosen not to participate, reflecting different approaches to Trump's role in the midterm campaign. The decision highlights the broader question facing the party: whether candidates benefit from a national campaign centered on the president or whether they are better served by emphasizing state and district-specific concerns.

Trump-a-Palooza Policy Messages Take Priority

Organizers have sought to reassure Republicans that the convention will not be solely a series of speeches about Trump.

Speakers are expected to discuss administration policies and Republican legislative accomplishments, including tax changes, health care initiatives and efforts to reduce prescription drug costs.

The Trump administration's policies have become a central component of the Republican campaign message. Coverage of the administration's claims and policy record has also drawn scrutiny, including fact-checking of statements concerning inflation, taxes, prescription drug prices and other domestic issues.

The convention therefore serves two purposes for Republicans: It is both a rally around Trump and an effort to persuade voters that the party's broader policy agenda should determine control of Congress.
