Now, thanks to a newly deployed tool at the European Space Agency's Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre (NEOCC), that question can be answered before the object even touches the atmosphere.

The tool addresses what's known in planetary defense circles as an "imminent impactor" — a small asteroid discovered only hours before it strikes. These objects are typically caught by ESA's Meerkat detection system, which flagged its latest case on September 6, 2026. Designated 2026 RW1, the asteroid was spotted roughly five hours ahead of impact by the Catalina Sky Survey and subsequently entered the atmosphere above the Indian Ocean, with scientists narrowing its entry point to an area smaller than 100 meters across.

What makes the new NEOCC tool remarkable is that it doesn't wait for a fireball to be photographed by ground cameras or for search teams to comb the countryside guessing where debris fell. As soon as impact is confirmed and the trajectory is tightly constrained, the new module automatically generates a strewn field map and pushes it out to NEOCC teams — often within a few hours of the initial warning. If more observations come in before impact, the whole process reruns, sharpening the prediction each time.

For planetary defense specialists, the significance goes beyond convenience. Having a predicted landing zone in hand before an object even reaches the atmosphere means civil-protection authorities can be looped in when the size and hazard level warrant it, and it gives scientists a head start on organizing meteorite recovery expeditions — critical for collecting samples before rain, soil, and handling contaminate them. The research behind the system, led by Marco Moscati and colleagues, was published this year in the journal Icarus.

The timing of this advance is notable. Planetary defense has been having something of a moment, and the next entry on the calendar is circled by scientists worldwide: April 13, 2029. That's when 99942 Apophis, an asteroid roughly 340 meters across, will pass Earth at a distance of less than 32,000 kilometers — closer than many geostationary satellites — in an approach visible to the naked eye across parts of Europe, Africa, and western Asia. Apophis poses no impact threat; radar tracking has ruled out any collision risk for at least a century. Tools like the one now running at NEOCC won't do anything for an object as large and well-tracked as Apophis, which has been studied for two decades. But for the next 2026 RW1 — the small, fast-arriving rock nobody sees coming until it's already falling — it may be the difference between a lost opportunity and a meteorite in a research lab within days.
