The family of Andrew Peters, a 28-year-old American veteran, received the news that he had gone missing in action while serving on the front lines with the International Legion of the Defense of Ukraine. And then they were notified of his death.

Due to security concerns officials did not disclose the specific location where he died.

Last year the US Army veteran volunteered and joined the fight against the Kremlin’s invasion. He arrived in Ukraine a couple of days after Thanksgiving. And brought his own armor and military gear. 

He stayed in constant touch with his family. And they feared the worse when he stopped texting around Feb. 11.

The news was later confirmed by US officials that he had died during combat on February 16. Peters had also served as an infantryman in Afghanistan in 2014. And he was known for his patriotism. And passion for serving his country. 

The American veteran fought for “honor”

 Andrew described all that he witnessed in Ukraine to his father. “I remember him telling me, ‘Dad, you cannot believe the horror and the suffering of the Ukrainian people that is going on over here,’” his father recalled.

His father, John Peters, said that Andrew wanted to make a difference and was a strong proponent of doing what was honorable even at great personal cost.

 Andrew volunteered to join the fight against the Kremlin's invasion in Ukraine and arrived there with his own armor and military gear.

He is the seventh known American to be killed in Ukraine in the last year. 

The United Nations has verified over 8,000 civilian deaths since the invasion began, and more than 100,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed or wounded.

Peters' family is waiting for his remains and personal belongings to be shipped home.

He said his son moved back to his hometown in Marshfield, Wisconsin after serving 4-years in Afghanistan. He enjoyed hiking and playing pickup hockey in a league with his father.
