WASHINGTON, DC - A brutal attack in the heart of Washington, DC, has reignited national outrage over unchecked street violence, forcing America’s leaders—and the public—to reckon with a wave of physical assaults many describe as an epidemic. In the early hours of Sunday morning, Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) employee better known online as “Big Balls,” was left bloodied and concussed after stepping in to protect a young woman from an attempted carjacking near Dupont Circle.

The attackers, described by witnesses as a group of up to eight, reportedly set upon Coristine after he intervened to defend the woman—underscoring just how suddenly violence can erupt on city streets. Marko Elez, a fellow Doge staffer, took to social media to commend Coristine’s courage, writing, “My friend Big Balls… is a hero. Edward protected a young woman from an attempted carjacking by eight thugs near Dupont Circle. Violence like this in the heart of DC is completely unacceptable.”

Epidemic of Violence: From DC to California

This incident, though shocking, is far from isolated. Presidential Response: Trump’s Warning of Federal Action

President Donald Trump responded swiftly to the news of Coristine’s beating, posting on his Truth Social platform:

“The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs. Washington, DC, must be safe, clean and beautiful for all Americans and, importantly, for the World to see… If DC doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore.”

Trump’s statement included a striking call for 14-year-olds to be prosecuted as adults—a move that suggests evidence at least some of the assailants involved in this attack may have been minors. The president’s willingness to threaten federal intervention reflects rising frustration at what he called “totally out of control” violent crime in the nation’s capital.

“If this continues, I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALISE this city,” Trump warned, noting, “Perhaps this should have been done a long time ago, then this incredible young man, and so many others, would not have had to go through the horrors of Violent Crime.”
