A shocking ambush has hit Mexico’s music community hard. Kevin Hernández the lead vocalist for the popular group H Nortena was brutally murdered, along with his family, in a violent attack attributed to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. 

The 34-year-old Tejano singer was ambushed on a highway in Chihuahua, Mexico, on May 5, while touring the northern state.

Hernández, his wife Marisela Sandoval, 34, and her two teenage children, Angela Ramirez, 14, and Ezequiel Ramirez Jr., 17, were all killed in the onslaught. The attackers riddled the car with at least 150 bullets at their vehicle. The car was left with large bullet holes and was extensively damaged.

 Sandoval’s mother and the couple's four-year-old son survived the attack but sustained injuries.

Sinaloa Cartel

Authorities believe the attack was orchestrated by the Sinaloa Cartel, a powerful and violent drug trafficking organization headquartered in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

 The cartel, also known as the Guzmán-Zambada Organization, the Federation, and the Blood Alliance, has a long history of smuggling drugs, laundering money, and engaging in human trafficking. 

Founded in the late 1960s, the cartel initially focused on marijuana smuggling into the United States and later pioneered the use of aircraft for drug transportation.

State Attorney General Juan Carlos Portillo of the Southern District of Chihuahua has confirmed that investigators are examining whether the attack is linked to the horse racing business managed by Sandoval.

She took over after her previous husband, Ezequiel Ramirez, was murdered in 2015, in another cartel linked tragedy.

Portillo revealed that attempts were made by cartel hitmen to kill Sandoval's mother who was wounded in the hospital. But she had been relocated to another medical facility.

Portillo stated, "We have more or less identified what the people who murdered the singer and his family do and the cartel they could belong to. It could be the Sinaloa Cartel." 

He added that his office is diligently reviewing video footage and collecting evidence to solve the case, noting that at least two individuals were involved in the attack.

H Nortena

Kevin Hernández was a celebrated figure in Tejano music, known for his talent as a vocalist and musician, adept at playing the bass guitar, accordion, and saxophone.

 H Nortena, formed in El Paso, Texas, in 2015, have eight albums and gained a devoted following. Tragically, the band released their latest track, "Si Dios me lleva con el" (If God takes me with Him), just a day after Hernández's untimely death.

In a statement on Facebook, H Nortena expressed their grief, "A Prayer for the irreparable loss of our friend, partner, brother and vocalist. Rest in peace."

This heart-wrenching event underscores the relentless violence inflicted by organized crime syndicates in Mexico, and the profound loss felt by the music community and Hernández's loved ones.
