In this election cycle, Florida has multiple amendments on the ballot that could alter the state's constitution, should they garner the necessary 60% threshold of support. Though Amendment 3 (the legalization of recreational marijuana) and Amendment 4 (the protection of abortion access) are the most high-profile. Democrats have urged state residents to back each of the aforementioned amendments. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and other state Republicans, on the other hand, are spending excessive amounts of time and money railing against both of these ballot initiatives. In fact, the victory of Amendment 4 would terminate the six-week abortion ban that DeSantis signed into law less than a year ago. Nationwide, abortion amendments have a track record of success, even in states like Kentucky where Republican voters outnumber Democratic ones. Now, less than one week before Election Day, most signs indicate Amendments 3 and 4 will pass in Florida.

Breaking down the numbers on these key amendments

A poll conducted by the Florida Atlantic University, Public Opinion Research Lab, and Mainstreet Research indicates most state voters want legalized marijuana and some baseline abortion protections. 60% of voters are believed to support Amendment 3. While Amendment 4 currently falls just 2% shy of the necessary 60% marker, polling shows 11% of Floridians remain undecided on it. Pollsters therefore deem it likely that at least 2% of undecideds will ultimately join the aforementioned 58% of voters in choosing "yes" on Amendment 4. While the 2024 presidential race has a notable gender gap in support for Harris vs. Trump, the same can't be said for Florida's two ballot initiatives. 61% of women and 54% of men support Amendment 4, while 58% of women and 63% of men favor Amendment 3.

A look at Florida's early voting numbers so far

More than five million Florida residents have already cast their ballots early in this year's election. Come Tuesday, November 5, more voters will make their way to the polls to vote not just on the legalization of marijuana and protection of abortion, but also on the presidential and congressional races. Over 900,000 Democrats have voted early, along with 640,000 No Party Affiliation voters, 76,000 "Other" voters, and more than 1.7 million Republicans. In the Sunshine State, there are currently 13,949,168 individuals registered to cast ballots.
