Hawk Fire Chases Nearly 14,000 Reno Residents From Their Homes Overnight

hawk fire

A wall of flame doesn't knock politely — it announces itself with ash raining from the sky and wind that feels like an open oven door. That's what northwest Reno woke up to early Sunday, as the fast-growing Hawk Fire swelled past 10,500 acres and pushed toward residential neighborhoods, triggering evacuation orders for nearly 14,000 homes. The mandatory "GO NOW" zone stretched all the way to the edge of the University of Nevada campus.

Where the Fire Is Burning

The blaze has torn through a rugged stretch of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest, where Peavine Mountain rises above a patchwork of homes and businesses hugging the Nevada side of the California state line. Some of those structures didn't survive the fire's advance, consumed entirely as flames moved down the hillside.

The State Response

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and activated the Nevada National Guard, deploying two helicopter crews to support aerial firefighting operations alongside 60 troops assigned to help police secure evacuated neighborhoods from looting or unauthorized entry.

The Ripple Effects Across Reno

The fire's reach extended well beyond flames alone. Nearly 10,000 customers in Washoe County lost power Sunday, and stretches of U.S. Route 395 — a critical north-south highway artery — were shut down entirely due to the blaze. Reno, home to more than 280,000 residents, found itself grappling with a crisis touching transportation, utilities and housing all at once.

Shelter for the Displaced

Washoe County emergency officials opened the Reno-Sparks Convention Center to evacuees, though with one significant catch: pets weren't allowed inside. Small and large animals were instead directed to two separate designated locations, adding an extra layer of logistical stress for families already fleeing with little notice.

A Family Loses Everything

For Cari Kieffer, the fire's toll became devastatingly clear through a social media video showing her house reduced to ashes — with only a scorched basketball hoop left standing as a marker of what used to be home.

"I woke up this morning and just started crying — all my kids, they lost everything," Kieffer said Sunday. "We lost all our stuff. Everything we own is gone."

A False Sense of Safety, Shattered Fast

Kieffer had been watching her son's football game Saturday when she learned their home on Reno's outskirts sat inside the evacuation zone. The family's fire-tracking app had been lagging noticeably behind the blaze's actual position, she said, leading them to mistakenly believe firefighters had held the line before it ever reached their neighborhood.

Instead, Kieffer, her husband and their four children — ranging from age 3 to 16 — scrambled to rescue their dogs and grab whatever belongings they could manage, as ash fell from the sky and wind blasted through their neighborhood like heat pouring from a furnace, driven by a wall of fire descending the hillside toward them.

"I kept looking outside and the flames just kept getting closer and closer every time I looked," Kieffer said. "I was like, we gotta go like now."

What Was Saved, and What Wasn't

With eyes stinging and her throat burning from smoke, Kieffer grabbed a handful of clothes, a Bible, her wedding photos and her mother's ashes. Amid the chaos — with firefighters shouting for the family to leave immediately — she said she left behind the family's birth certificates and couldn't retrieve her childhood photos at all.

The family fled to a friend's house, only to be forced to evacuate again from there. By Saturday evening, they learned their own home was gone entirely.

A Grandfather Flees With Only His Dogs

Jaida Hargrove's grandfather, Rick Arrate, lived alone on Peavine Mountain, overlooking Reno and Sparks. Firefighters had worked to contain the flames near his home using bulldozers, tree removal and fire retardant, according to Hargrove.

"They all thought it would be OK," she said. "And then, in about 30 minutes, the winds just changed and it came way too fast."

Arrate and the firefighters working near his property were forced off the mountain in a hurry. "All he was able to take with him was his two golden retrievers," Hargrove said. Arrate spent Saturday night at Hargrove's parents' home, with his next steps still unclear.

Separate GoFundMe crowdfunding campaigns have since been established to support both Arrate and the Kieffer family as they navigate the aftermath.

A Fire That Didn't Seem Threatening — At First

Not everyone recognized the danger early on. Tyler Duvall, who went camping over the weekend, said the fire was so small Saturday morning that it barely registered as a concern. By the next day, his house sat inside the evacuation zone and he couldn't even make it back to check on it.

"The wind really blew it up," Duvall said, adding that he knows of homes that burned roughly a mile from his own property.

The Conditions Fueling the Blaze

According to Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue in Reno, strong, gusty winds combined with low humidity and dry vegetation have driven the fire's rapid growth. "Approximately 400 personnel are currently working on the incident, with resources coming together from local, state and federal agencies, including ground crews and air resources," the agency said in a statement.

A New Reno Resident's Rough Introduction

Retired police officer and firefighter Ted Melden has already gotten an intense crash course in Nevada's natural hazards since relocating to Reno with his wife earlier this month from Chapin, South Carolina. In just weeks, he's weathered a hailstorm with flash flooding, two separate power outages, and now his second regional wildfire incident within a two-week span.

"Just another natural disaster," Melden said.

During his two years living in South Carolina, Melden said Hurricane Helene knocked down trees in his yard, while a separate tornado damaged parts of his neighborhood. For now, he hasn't been ordered to evacuate his Reno home, but he's kept his bags packed just in case.

"This thing kicked off yesterday, and it just went," Melden said, describing the fire's explosive speed. "I'm hoping they'll get a good handle on it. You just have to roll with the flow and be ready. Always be prepared and have a full tank of gas."

Key Institutions Remain Just Outside the Danger Zone

As of Sunday morning, the University of Nevada's Reno campus sat just outside the evacuation zone. The university, which enrolled roughly 24,000 students in fall 2025, said it has an emergency response plan ready should conditions worsen.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport also remained outside the affected area, with commercial flights operating normally Sunday. The smaller Reno-Stead Airport, however, was closed to general aviation traffic because of the Hawk Fire, though it stayed open to support firefighting aircraft operations.

Local Businesses and Officials Respond

Casinos across Reno offered discounted hotel rooms to evacuees seeking shelter. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve issued an urgent plea on social media late Saturday night: "If you have been told to evacuate, please don't wait! Structures have already been burned in this fire and your life is more important than a building."

Authorities also kept a close watch on a county detention facility located just blocks from the outer edge of the evacuation warning area, monitoring the situation closely as conditions evolved.

Part of a Broader Pattern

The Hawk Fire isn't an isolated event for the region. Earlier this month, three separate wildfires fueled by hot, dry and windy conditions north of Reno forced more than 13,000 residents from their homes, according to the Nevada National Guard. The largest of those blazes, the Bug Fire, burned nearly 150 square miles before firefighters brought it to near-full containment.
