Memorial Service was well-attended

The current First Lady and every living former U.S. First Lady attended Tuesday's tribute service for First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Dr. Jill Biden, Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush gathered for Tuesday's memorial service for First Lady Rosalynn Carter in Atlanta.

The tribute service took place at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the Emory University campus in Atlanta. While former Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama were notably absent, President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and George Bush gathered to pay their respects.

The event, attended by an invitation-only guest list, included heartfelt eulogies from family members, including Rosalynn and Jimmy's daughter Amy and their grandson Jason Carter. The service featured Rosalynn's favorite Scripture passages and songs, emphasizing the personal and spiritual aspects of her life.

Former PBS NewsHour anchor Judy Woodruff added her voice to the tribute, creating a touching and comprehensive memorial for the beloved former first lady.

The end of an era

Rosalynn's passing marked the end of an era, and her surviving grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers, symbolizing the continuation of her legacy. The memorial service was just one part of a series of events in Georgia, culminating in a private funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church and interment at the Carter family residence in Plains, Georgia.

The Carters' enduring love story was highlighted when they made their last public appearance in September at the Plains Peanut Festival, shortly before Jimmy Carter's 99th birthday. 

In February of the same year, the former president entered hospice care at home. And Rosalynn joined him in hospice care just 2 days before her death.

Following the memorial service in Atlanta, Rosalynn's body was transported to Plains for the private funeral and interment. Maranatha Baptist Church, the couple's longtime home church, served as the backdrop for the intimate farewell.

As the nation mourns the loss of a trailblazing first lady, the legacy of Rosalynn Carter lives on, not only in the pages of history but in the hearts of those who were touched by her grace, resilience, and dedication to public service.
