Sade Robinson was a bright, driven 19-year-old college student from Milwaukee with dreams of joining the military. But on April 1, 2024, her life was brutally cut short. After going on a first date with 34-year-old Maxwell Anderson, she disappeared.

 That date ended in a tragedy that shocked the nation and reignited a conversation about the systemic neglect of missing Black women.

Robinson never returned home. The next day, her severed leg was found on the shores of Lake Michigan, toes still painted pink. Over the next few weeks, authorities uncovered dismembered parts of her body scattered throughout Milwaukee County. Her head has yet to be recovered.

Anderson was arrested and later convicted of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse, and arson.

Prosecutors detailed how Anderson “brutally and callously” murdered Robinson shortly after dinner, dismembered her, and burned her vehicle in an attempt to destroy evidence. Read full coverage from The Independent.

The Search for Sade Robinson

Sade Robinson’s final hours were pieced together through phone data, surveillance footage, and witness testimony.

The teenager had met Anderson at the Twisted Fisherman restaurant before heading to Dukes on Water for drinks. Security footage later showed her vehicle traveling across the city, but Sade was not seen again.

Her co-workers reported her missing when she didn’t show up to work the next day. However, her mother, Sheena Scarbrough, wasn’t informed for another 48 hours — a delay that has become a flashpoint for change.

Police later used apps like Life360 and other digital clues to trace Robinson’s final movements, leading them to Warnimont Park, where her leg was found. Surveillance footage from Milwaukee Transit also showed Anderson near the scene of the burned-out vehicle.

Despite damning evidence — including photos on Anderson’s phone of Robinson, one showing her pants and underwear being pulled down — Anderson’s defense argued there was no motive.

He did not testify or present any witnesses. But the jury was convinced by the digital and forensic evidence, including testimony from a confidential informant who claimed Anderson had planned Robinson’s murder for weeks.

Legislation for Change: Massachusetts Takes Action

The heartbreak surrounding Robinson’s death has led to calls for legislative reform, especially in how law enforcement handles missing Black women’s cases.

In Massachusetts, State Rep. Bud Williams introduced a bill that would create a statewide task force to improve how law enforcement handles missing Black women cases. The task force would focus on:

• Improving coordination between local and state agencies
• Tracking racial disparities in missing persons investigations
• Developing early notification protocols for families
• Creating culturally responsive outreach campaigns
