The Platform and the Child: The Dark Side of OnlyFans and Its Ties To Human Trafficking

OnlyFans pimp Jayson Rosero, in a documented interview with the New York Times, admitted to deliberately marketing to subscribers interested in girls on the legal border of adulthood. He was not an anomaly. He was, by the account of investigators, representative of an entire class of operators who have identified the platform as a venue for commercial exploitation that is harder to prosecute than street-based trafficking and harder to detect than direct abuse.
The age verification failures are, in this light, not accidents. They are consequences of a system that was designed to create the appearance of safety rather than the substance of it. Minors have used fake identification documents — the digital equivalent of a fake ID at a bar — to create accounts. In at least one documented case, a minor named Leah used a fake driving license to upload explicit material to the platform. Her age was anonymously reported to OnlyFans. The company reviewed the account, determined it "appeared legitimate," and took no further action. Leah's age was visible on multiple other social media platforms to which OnlyFans claims to cross-reference. The cross-referencing, evidently, did not occur.
Between December 2019 and June 2024, Reuters documented thirty complaints involving more than two hundred explicit videos and images of children on the platform — some of which reportedly remained online for over a year after being flagged. In the first half of 2024, OnlyFans submitted sixty reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children relating to child sexual abuse material on its platform. Sixty reports in six months. From a platform with three hundred million users and a business model that makes its content invisible to external investigators. The number is not a measure of the scale of the problem. It is a measure of the fraction of the problem that a poorly resourced internal review process happened to catch.

The Paywall as Shield
There is a feature of the OnlyFans business model that distinguishes it, in ways that matter enormously for child protection, from every other major platform on which exploitation has been documented. On Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok, enormous quantities of open-source information are available to investigators. A reported account can be examined, screenshotted, cross-referenced, and built into an evidentiary file without paying anything to anyone. The platforms are imperfect instruments of child safety, and their records on CSAM are mixed, but they are at least legible to the outside world in a way that permits external accountability.
