Trans Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif

Trans Algerian boxer Imane Khelif delivered multiple blows to the face of Italy's Angela Carinia at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Carini was forced to withdrawal in just 46 seconds during a match in the Women's 145 lb. category.  Khelif is closer to securing a gold medal while Carini’s Olympic dreams were shattered.

This fight has become a focal point amid ongoing debates about gender eligibility in sports. With critics arguing that males have a physical advantage over biological women.

Angela Carini's journey to the Olympics has been marked by struggle and determination.

She earned her spot in Paris after succeeding at the Boxing 1st World Qualification Tournament. Carini dedicated her victory to her late father, who passed away before she could share the news of her qualification.

Olympics Gender Disputes

Khelif's participation in the Olympics has ignited widespread discussion online about the fairness and protection of women's sports. Notably, Khelif was assigned male at birth, raising questions about gender eligibility in boxing.

Last year, the International Boxing Association (IBA) barred Khelif from the Women's World Championships for failing gender eligibility criteria before her anticipated gold medal bout in New Delhi.

The 25-year-old boxer tested positive for elevated testosterone levels, leading to the cancellation of her match against 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Medalist Yang Liu.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) introduced new rules allowing Khelif to compete this year despite the fact that she is a biological male.

An official statement explained that the decision was based on the latest examination conducted under confidential procedures. Another boxer, Lin Yu-ting, was also disqualified along with Khelif but chose not to contest the IBA's ruling.

Both athletes have consistently identified as female in all competitions.

The match between Khelif and Carini began with both fighters donning their mandated headgear in anticipation of a power-packed showdown. Within the first 30 seconds, Khelif delivered a powerful right-hand jab to Carini's face, drawing a notable reaction from the audience. Carini called for a timeout, retreating to her corner where her coach attempted to adjust her headgear, which had been dislodged by the punch's force.

Upon briefly continuing, Carini returned to her coaches again, ultimately surrendering with 2:14 remaining in the first round. Following her commanding performance, Khelif expressed her ambitions: "I'm here for the gold—I fight everybody." She later shared a photo of her victory on Instagram but restricted comments after receiving hostile feedback on previous posts.

In contrast, Carini was visibly emotional after the match and gave a teary-eyed post-fight interview in Italian. "I couldn't finish the match. I felt a sharp pain in my nose," Carini said via translation.

"I thought, 'For my experience and maturity as a woman, I hope my country won't be disappointed. I hope my father won't be disappointed.' But I stopped. I decided to stop for myself because it could have been the fight of my life, but I needed to protect myself in that moment."

Khelif's next match is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3. A victory would guarantee her at least a bronze medal.
