Gaetz has gone on record saying that Trump’s support of McCarthy is wrong. Meanwhile, Boebert claims rather than the former president urging Republicans to back McCarthy, he should urge McCarthy to bow out of the race.
This is horrible news for Trump. House Republicans’ refusal to support McCarthy at Trump’s behest comes amid Trump’s chosen candidates in the 2022 midterms overwhelmingly losing their races.
This, too, is a matter the recent president tried to dodge accountability for.
Regarding the failures of his midterm candidates, Trump claimed some Republicans’ hardline attitudes on abortion posed problems. However, one can easily make the case that both abortion and Trump hurt GOP members last year.
Anti-McCarthy House Republicans are also viewed as some of the most conservative and pro-Trump lawmakers; so their refusal to go along with what the president wants (at least thus far) truly speaks volumes.
A mess for all to see
Republicans outside of the House, such as Fox News hosts Sean Hannity and Jeanine Pirro, have been critical of what’s happening in the chamber. GOP members also warn Republicans’ inability to come to an agreement is an embarrassment that’s hurting the nation.
