Judge Allows Tiger Woods to Travel Abroad for Medical Treatment

A judge in Florida on Wednesday approved a request from Tiger Woods to leave the United States and seek care at an inpatient treatment facility overseas, according to court documents.

The motion was filed the same day by Woods’ attorney, Douglas Duncan, who argued that the golfer requires an “intensive, highly individualized and medically integrated program,” along with protection from ongoing media attention and public exposure.

Darren Steele, a judge in Martin County, granted the request after holding a teleconference with Duncan and Assistant State Attorney Caroline Houston.

"Based upon the Defendant's treating physician, the out of country treatment facility recommendation is based upon the Defendant's complex clinical presentation and the urgent need for a level of care that cannot safely or effectively be done within the United States, as his privacy has been repeatedly compromised," Duncan wrote in the motion.

"Ongoing medical scrutiny and public exposure create significant barriers to his care and would result in setbacks and an inability to fully engage in treatment."

The decision follows a statement issued Tuesday by Woods, a 15-time major champion, in which he said he is “stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.” The announcement came four days after his arrest in Florida on suspicion of DUI and refusal to submit to a lawful test following a rollover crash.

Woods entered a not guilty plea to the misdemeanor charges on Tuesday.

"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," Woods said in a statement posted to his social media accounts. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."

In the filing, Duncan said the unnamed facility outside the U.S. is equipped to “provide continuous monitoring and the ability to rapidly adjust treatment intervention in a highly controlled environment.”

Details outlined in an arrest affidavit released Tuesday by the Martin County Sheriff’s Department described Woods’ condition at the time of his arrest. Deputy Tatiana Levenar reported that Woods appeared to be “sweating profusely” and moved in a “lethargic and slow” manner during their interaction.

According to the affidavit, Woods told the deputy he had undergone seven back surgeries and more than 20 procedures on his right leg, injuries stemming from a serious car crash near Los Angeles in February 2021.

Levenar also observed that after removing his sunglasses, Woods’ eyes were “bloodshot and glassy,” and his pupils were “extremely dilated.” When asked if he had been drinking alcohol, Woods responded: "None."

When Levenar asked if Woods had taken any prescription medication, he stated: "I take a few." Woods said he had taken prescription pills earlier in the morning, according to the report.

The names of the medications were redacted in the affidavit.

A second deputy reported finding two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ left pants pocket. Hydrocodone was also identified in his system during a previous DUI-related arrest in May 2017.

Duncan also represented Woods in that earlier case, when officers found him asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle with two flat tires and damage to both bumpers. Woods later attributed the incident to a negative reaction to a combination of prescribed pain medications.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to reckless driving and entered a diversion program as part of a plea agreement. That same year, Woods sought treatment at a facility for issues related to prescription drug use.

In February 2021, Woods sustained severe leg injuries in a single-vehicle crash outside Los Angeles in which his SUV rolled multiple times, leaving him trapped inside. He later underwent surgery for “open fractures” in his lower right leg, including the insertion of a rod in his tibia and screws and pins in his foot and ankle. He remained hospitalized for three weeks following the procedure.
