IT jobs are now harder to fill because both companies and candidates are becoming much more selective.  A wrong hiring decision hurts both the enterprise and the candidate.

When a company is being more selective, often it is because the enterprise has identified a new skill set requirement, role, and/or responsibility that traditional IT professional candidates do not have.  Specific skills, roles, and responsibilities need to be clearly identified and included in the job descriptions that are utilized to fill positions.

The three most common drivers in the change of skills, roles, and responsibilities are:

• Knowledge and experience in the enterprise's markets: With the move towards a socially engaged and integrated business environment, having an IT professional who can work across various platforms and cultures is paramount.  IT professionals need to understand the interconnectedness of business operations across legacy systems and social networks. This is crucial to the long-term success of both the IT function and enterprise operations.
• Cultural Fit: The IT professional needs to "fit-in" and complement the existing IT team and enterprise operational environment. In addition, they need to be able to think outside of the box to communicate, market, and implement the "right" amount of technological innovation.
• Competitive pressures to be a technological leader: Corporations of all sizes are rife with C-Level executives that want to have the killer applications of the future.   In the 80s and 90s, large companies like FedEx, American Airlines, and American Hospital Supply developed systems that changed the business paradigm. Today companies are looking to hire IT professionals who can do this for them.  This now is the goal of many small to mid-sized enterprises.

A full and detailed job description is a must for this environment.  Well defined job descriptions communicate not only expectations but also the scope of responsibilities.  With this in hand, both the candidate and the enterprise can make a more informed decision.

Janco, in concert with over 100 enterprises across many industries and countries, has created a full set of IT job descriptions that can be implemented "right out of the box". They are delivered electronically in MS WORD, PDF, and ePub formats.
