John Wick 4 was a major hit at the box office, to say the least. The longest film in the John Wick saga managed to rake in a staggering $363 million around the world. The movie received glowing reviews for its plot, actors' performances, and more. Originally, there were reports that the fourth John Wick movie was meant to be the last. However, the ending of John Wick 4 leaves this purposefully ambiguous. The movie seems to suggest that Wick eventually succumbed to his injuries after dueling with Donnie Yen's Caine. However, there is also the possibility that Wick simply went into hiding from the High Table or otherwise faked his death. After the release of John Wick 4, word on the street was the success of this film would determine whether or not a fifth installment takes place. Now, it's come out that John Wick 5 is very much happening.

What to know about John Wick 5 so far

There are many running theories about the plot of John Wick 5. It could serve as a sequel to the previous film, hence confirming fan theories that Wick did, in fact, wind up living even after dueling with Caine at the end of John Wick 4. Likewise, there is also the possibility of John Wick 5 serving as a prequel of sorts. However, this appears less likely. For starters, there is already a John Wick prequel series, The Continental, which is coming to Peacock later this year. On top of that, a John Wick spin-off, The Ballerina (starring Ana de Armas), comes in 2024, with the events of the movie taking place between John Wick 3 and John Wick 4. As for the particulars of John Wick 5, Lionsgate hasn't provided many details about the plot. However, the company did confirm John Wick 5 is undergoing development as the larger universe gets fleshed out with the aforementioned installments. Finally, Lionsgate assured that once John Wick 5 does, in fact, materialize, viewers can look forward to an "organic" story. Considering previous John Wick movies, 2025 or 2026 appear to be the best-estimated timeframes for the next film to come.
