A cybersecurity threat hit UT Health East Texas on Thanksgiving Day. An It prompted the hospital network to implement emergency measures. The attack led to a network outage of the hospital group, headquartered in Tyler, Texas.

The hospital group responded by initiating lockdown procedures and diverting ambulances. As the incident unfolds, the healthcare system faces challenges in restoring its computer networks, highlighting the persistent threat of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.

The UT Health East Texas cyber-attack was discovered when the hospital network detected a network outage, prompting a swift response to secure and lock down its systems.

 The incident has affected the operations of 10 hospitals and over 90 clinics in the region, leading to the diversion of ambulances since Thanksgiving Day. The hospital group has been operating under established downtime procedures as technicians work to investigate the cybersecurity incident and restore computer systems.

Cybersecurity Threat

The East Texas healthcare system is just the latest hospital group that has been forced to turn ambulances away because of an apparent cybersecurity breach.

Similar attacks this year forced hospitals in Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, and Pennsylvania to turn away incoming ambulances.

It has not been disclosed whether federal authorities are actively investigating the cybersecurity threat to the Texas hospital system. 

In 2023, there have been 209 publicly reported ransomware attacks on U.S. healthcare organizations. This is an increase 162 attacks in 2022, according to Allan Liska, a ransomware expert at cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.

The Department of Health and Human Services, US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the FBI have yet to provide official statements or comments on the ongoing situation.

The absence of information from federal authorities raises questions about the coordination between healthcare organizations and government agencies.

Healthcare Providers

Healthcare providers, often lacking robust cybersecurity resources, struggle to defend themselves against evolving cyber threats. Disruptions in a hospital network will often shut down critical services, leaving doctors unable to access patient information and safely treat patients.

Federal officials and critical infrastructure operators, including hospitals, express heightened concerns about cyberattacks during long holiday weekends when cybersecurity teams may be stretched thin. 

The potential for ransomware attacks, a persistent threat, remains a significant challenge for hospitals, especially over holidays when many Americans have time off.

Despite the escalating threat landscape, healthcare organizations continue to face challenges in securing their systems.

 The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a comprehensive cybersecurity plan aimed at fortifying hospitals against cyber threats. 

The cybersecurity threat at UT Health East Texas highlights the vulnerability of healthcare systems to cyberattacks and the need for proactive measures to safeguard critical infrastructure. 

As the incident unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder that the healthcare sector must prioritize cybersecurity to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential services, especially during long holiday weekends when the risk of attacks is heightened.
