Bitcoin, the flagship cryptocurrency, has surged to an all-time high of $101,000, marking a historic milestone for the crypto community.

This record-breaking achievement comes in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, a result that has sparked optimism among cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

Crypto Community Cheers Trump’s Pro-Crypto Stance

Throughout his campaign, Trump actively courted the crypto community, pledging to be a defender of digital assets.

This commitment appears to have resonated with investors, as bitcoin skyrocketed from $68,000 just a day before the election to its current six-figure value. This represents a 47% return on investment in mere days.

Looking at the broader picture, bitcoin’s value has surged 124% since the start of the year and 165% from this time last year. A long-term investor who put $5,000 into bitcoin five years ago would now see their investment swell to $62,500.

Crypto advocates anticipate a more favorable regulatory environment under Trump, contrasting it with the approach of President Joe Biden's administration, which faced criticism for overregulating the industry.

Biden’s SEC Seen as Hostile to Crypto

Under Biden, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), led by Chairman Gary Gensler, was widely viewed as antagonistic toward cryptocurrencies. The SEC pursued high-profile lawsuits against major exchanges, including Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken, accusing them of operating unregistered securities exchanges.

In a notable case, the SEC sued Ripple Labs in 2020 over the sale of XRP tokens, alleging it was an unregistered securities offering. While Ripple secured a partial legal victory in 2023, uncertainties linger as the SEC continues its appeal.

Gensler recently announced his resignation ahead of Trump’s inauguration, coinciding with bitcoin’s climb past $100,000.

Trump’s Crypto-Friendly SEC Nominee

Trump announced the nomination of Paul Atkins, a known crypto advocate, as the next SEC chair. Atkins, a former SEC commissioner under President George W. Bush is recognized for his “do no harm” regulatory philosophy.

“Paul is a proven leader for common-sense regulations,” Trump said on a Truth Social post. “He recognizes that digital assets and other innovations are crucial to making America greater than ever before.”

Financial regulation expert Jennifer Schulp of the Cato Institute noted that Atkins’ leadership could signal a rollback of enforcement actions against crypto and pave the way for new regulatory frameworks.

Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Proposed

Amid the rising optimism, pro-crypto legislation is also gaining momentum. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) plans to reintroduce her BITCOIN Act, proposing a strategic bitcoin reserve for the United States.

The initiative aims to establish a national reserve of one million bitcoins, valued at nearly $100 billion, to hedge against inflation and bolster the dollar's global standing.

While proponents praise the idea as a safeguard against economic instability, critics highlight the risks associated with bitcoin’s volatility.
