DNA Solves the Mystery of Jack the Ripper After 150 Years

Jack the Ripper

Historian Russell Edwards has played a crucial role in solving one of history’s greatest mysteries: the identity of Jack the Ripper.

The breakthrough came after Edwards purchased a shawl believed to belong to one of the Ripper’s victims, Catherine Eddowes, and subjected it to DNA testing.

In an interview with “Today Show Australia,” Edwards explained that he acquired the shawl in 2007 at an auction.

The artifact was reportedly discovered at the crime scene where Eddowes was murdered. DNA analysis confirmed that blood found on the shawl matched a direct descendant of Eddowes—her great-great-great-granddaughter.

Further testing revealed semen on the shawl, which was traced to Aaron Kosminski through his oldest brother’s great-great-granddaughter.

The DNA analysis provided a 100% match, definitively linking Kosminski to the infamous serial killer.

“He is no longer just a suspect. We can hold him, finally, to account for his terrible deeds,” Edwards wrote.

“My search is over: Aaron Kosminski is Jack the Ripper.”

Who Was Aaron Kosminski?

Aaron Kosminski was a Polish immigrant who arrived in Whitechapel, England, in 1881 with his brother. He worked as a barber upon settling in London.

At the time of the gruesome Whitechapel murders, Kosminski was 23 years old.

He had long been considered a suspect in the infamous “Whitechapel Murders,” a series of brutal killings that terrorized London. However, no conclusive evidence had previously linked him to the crimes.

Notably, the murders abruptly ceased when Kosminski was committed to an insane asylum. He suffered from severe schizophrenia and remained institutionalized until he died in 1919.

The Legacy of Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer who terrorized London’s Whitechapel district between 1888 and 1891. Law enforcement officials investigated the violent deaths of 11 women during this period, but Scotland Yard ultimately confirmed that five of these murders were the work of a single perpetrator.

The so-called ‘Canonical Five” victims of Jack the Ripper were:

  • Elizabeth Stride
  • Mary Jane Kelly
  • Mary Ann Nichols
  • Annie Chapman
  • Catherine Eddowes

Nicknamed the “Whitechapel Murderer” and the “Leather Apron,” Jack the Ripper was notorious for slitting his victims’ throats before mutilating their bodies, removing internal organs in at least three cases.

Despite widespread belief that the victims were prostitutes, Penguin Books has noted that there is little definitive evidence to support this claim.

Over the years, Jack the Ripper’s crimes have inspired hundreds of books, films, and documentaries. Modern-day sleuths and historians like Edwards have spent decades trying to solve the mystery, contributing to the ongoing fascination with the case.

What Happens Next?

Following his discovery, Edwards has sought legal action to officially recognize Kosminski as Jack the Ripper. According to the Daily Mail, Edwards has enlisted a legal team to push for an inquest into the case.

The descendants of both Eddowes and Kosminski have expressed their support for this initiative. Edwards and his team have formally requested permission from the attorney general to take the case to Britain’s High Court.

“The name Jack the Ripper has become sensationalized. It has gone down in history as this famous character,” said Karen Miller, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Eddowes, in an interview with the Daily Mail.

“What about the real name of the person who did this? Having the real person legally named in a court, which can consider all the evidence, would be a form of justice for the victims. We have got the proof. Now, we need this inquest to legally name the killer.”
