The moon will turn a deep red in mid-March as the first total lunar eclipse since 2022 unfolds in the night sky. Depending on local weather conditions the Blood Red Moon will be visible across the United States.

This highly anticipated event is considered one of the top astronomical sights of 2025. 

Unlike a total solar eclipse, which is only visible from a small geographic area, this lunar eclipse will be visible across all of North America on the night of Thursday, March 13, into the early morning of Friday, March 14.

The Blood Red Moon

When the moon passes through Earth's shadow, it takes on a reddish hue. This is a phenomenon often referred to as a "Blood Moon." 

According to NASA, "During a lunar eclipse, the moon appears red or orange because any sunlight that's not blocked by our planet is filtered through a thick slice of Earth's atmosphere on its way to the lunar surface. It's as if all the world's sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the Moon."

The exact shade of red or orange can vary due to atmospheric conditions. Events such as volcanic eruptions can alter the color, sometimes resulting in a dark red, rusty orange, or even a subtle blue tint along the moon’s edges.

Where to See the Total Eclipse

The total lunar eclipse on March 13-14 will be visible across North and South America. Other regions, including western Europe, western Africa, and New Zealand, will also get a brief glimpse of the event.

For those on the U.S. East Coast, the best viewing time will be 2:58 a.m. EDT.

 In the western United States, the peak of the eclipse will occur just before midnight, with optimal viewing in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.

This will be the first of two total lunar eclipses in 2025. However, it will be the only one visible from North America. The second total lunar eclipse, occurring on September 7-8, will be seen in Asia, Australia, and parts of Africa and Europe.

For those eager to witness another total lunar eclipse from North America, the next opportunity will come on March 3, 2026. The best views of this future event are expected across the western United States and western Canada.
