2k US Flights Cancelled as Midwest Blizzards Paralyze Major Airports

2k US flights cancelled

A powerful wave of winter storms has grounded travelers across the country, with 2k US flights cancelled Sunday as blizzard conditions hammered the Upper Midwest and rippled through the national aviation network.

What is typically a humming system of jets, runways and departure boards slowed to a crawl, leaving passengers stranded and several major airports eerily quiet.

Massive Wave of Cancellations Across the Country

According to flight tracking data from FlightAware, the United States accounted for the vast majority of global cancellations Sunday.

Out of roughly 2,842 flight cancellations worldwide, at least 2,216 occurred within the United Statesrepresenting about 78% of all grounded flights globally.

The disruption didn’t stop with cancellations.

Across the country, at least 6,826 flights were delayed, creating a cascading chain reaction that disrupted schedules throughout the aviation system.

Midwest Storms Trigger Aviation Chaos

The epicenter of the crisis remains in the Upper Midwest, where heavy snowfall and fierce winds transformed airports into logistical battlegrounds.

Cities like Chicago and Minneapolis have borne the brunt of the storm’s impact, though ripple effects have stretched to major hubs across the country.

Airports in Atlanta and Denver have also reported significant disruptions as aircraft schedules unraveled.

O’Hare Airport Hit Hardest by Volume

The airport experiencing the greatest number of affected flights is O'Hare International Airport.

Data from FlyChicago indicates roughly 790 flights were disrupted at the airport.

Among those:

  • 27% of departing flights were canceled

  • 29% of incoming flights were canceled

  • 839 flights were delayed

Passengers faced average delays of about 82 minutes, turning departure boards into long lists of red warning notices.

Minneapolis Airport Nearly Empties

While Chicago experienced the largest number of disruptions, Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport saw the highest percentage of cancellations.

According to FlightAware:

  • 73% of departing flights were canceled

  • 64% of arriving flights were canceled

Airport officials reported 726 total cancellations, while just 177 flights departed on time.

Local outlet FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul described the terminals as resembling a ghost town,” with minimal staff and almost no passengers moving through normally crowded concourses.

Airport Statement Highlights Storm’s Severity

Airport officials acknowledged the disruption in a message posted Sunday morning.

Fake spring came to an end as snow arrived at MSP Saturday evening,” the airport said on social media.

Airlines had canceled more than 450 flights to and from the airport on Sunday alone, officials noted, urging travelers to check flight statuses before heading to the terminal.

Atlanta Hub Also Feels the Shockwaves

The storm’s reach extended far beyond the Midwest.

At Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the busiest hubs in the world, disruptions also piled up.

Airport data showed:

  • 227 delayed flights

  • 87 canceled flights

Because Atlanta serves as a major connection point for flights traveling to and from Chicago and Minneapolis, the Midwest storm quickly triggered delays across the broader national network.

Airlines Offer Travel Flexibility

Major airlines have moved quickly to help passengers adapt to the chaos.

Carriers including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines have issued travel waivers allowing customers to adjust their plans without heavy penalties.

United Airlines said affected passengers may reschedule flights without change fees or fare differences, provided the replacement flight:

  • Departs between March 12 and March 20, 2026

  • Is on a United aircraft

  • Uses the same cities and cabin class as the original booking

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines extended its rebooking deadline to March 24, 2026, while American Airlines announced passengers can modify trips without change fees if new bookings are made by March 26, 2026.

Travelers Urged to Monitor Flight Status

With 2k US flights cancelled and thousands more delayed, aviation officials are urging passengers to remain cautious and monitor airline websites closely.

For now, as snow continues to blanket the Midwest, travelers across the country remain caught in the storm’s wake—watching the skies and waiting for runways to reopen.
