Estefany Rodríguez Released From ICE Custody After Weeks of Detention

Estefany Rodríguez released from ICE custody

In a case drawing national attention, Estefany Rodríguez released from ICE custody marks a dramatic turn after weeks of detention that advocates say highlights growing concerns over press freedom in the United States.

Estefany Rodríguez, a Nashville-based reporter for Nashville Noticias, was freed Thursday from a Louisiana detention facility after posting a $10,000 bond. Her release comes just over two weeks after she was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Nashville.

Legal Battle Continues on Two Fronts

“Today we celebrate that Estefany has been released… and is on her way home to be with her family,” said Mike Holley of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition.

Rodríguez’s legal team is pursuing two separate cases—one challenging her detention and another concerning her immigration status. Attorneys are also seeking a court order to prevent what they describe as similar mistreatment in the future.

A legal petition argues that Rodríguez had been reporting stories critical of ICE practices and was covering immigration arrests just a day before she was detained—raising questions about whether her journalism played a role in her arrest.

Conflicting Claims Over Immigration Status

Rodríguez fled Colombia in 2021 after receiving death threats tied to her reporting. She entered the United States legally on a tourist visa and applied for political asylum before it expired.

At the time of her detention, she had a pending green card application and a valid work permit issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

ICE, however, claimed Rodríguez “currently has no lawful immigration status” and alleged she violated her visa conditions by failing to leave the country. The agency also said she missed two immigration appointments.

Her immigration lawyer disputed those claims, citing a severe winter storm in Nashville that shut down ICE offices and made travel dangerous. On another scheduled visit, officers reportedly could not locate her appointment in the system. Rodríguez was due for a check-in on March 17—but was already in custody by then.

Conditions in Detention Raise Concerns

Before her release, Rodríguez spent nearly a week and a half in Alabama’s Etowah County Jail. Court filings allege she was denied attorney-client communication and placed in isolation for five days.

Advocates say her $10,000 bond is unusually high, particularly given that her husband and 7-year-old daughter live in the U.S. and she is not considered a flight risk.

Press Freedom Groups Sound Alarm

The Committee to Protect Journalists welcomed her release but warned the case could have broader implications.

“Her detention has had a chilling effect,” said José Zamora. “It undermines journalists’ ability… to cover their communities without fear of retaliation.”

A Wider Pattern Emerges

Rodríguez’s case is not isolated. Amid a nationwide immigration crackdown, other journalists have faced detention or deportation.

In October, independent journalist Mario Guevara was deported to El Salvador after months in federal custody. Like Rodríguez, he had fled threats in his home country and reported on U.S. immigration issues before his arrest.

An Ongoing Fight Beyond Release

While Rodríguez is now free, her legal challenges remain unresolved. Her case, like a spotlight cutting through fog, continues to illuminate tensions between immigration enforcement and the fundamental role of a free press.
