The end of an era in late-night television is turning into something far louder, messier, and more explosive than anyone expected. Stephen Colbert’s final days at CBS are already packed with celebrity sendoffs, political firestorms, and now a jaw-dropping stunt involving furniture flying off the roof of one of TV’s most iconic stages.

Stephen Colbert’s 11-year run as host of “The Late Show” will end on May 21. That its untimely end was announced mere weeks before the Trump-loyalist Ellison family finalized their CBS-Paramount takeover led many to believe it was a move to appease Trump, while the network claimed Colbert’s late-night program was losing around $40 million a year. That figure immediately sparked backlash, including a sharp response from rival Jimmy Kimmel.

“Not a snowball’s chance in hell that’s accurate.”

President Trump, meanwhile, reacted with visible satisfaction, pouring fuel on the controversy surrounding Colbert’s exit and intensifying speculation about political pressure behind the scenes.

“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!”

Whether coincidence or calculated timing, Colbert is now in his final stretch, and CBS is suddenly the center of a late-night culture war.

A Star-Studded Farewell Tour Inside the Ed Sullivan Theater

As the countdown continues, Colbert has transformed his final episodes into a full-scale celebrity celebration. The guest list reads like a late-night hall of fame, including fellow hosts Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon, along with Tom Hanks, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and former President Barack Obama.

The emotional high point arrived Thursday night when Colbert welcomed his predecessor, David Letterman, back to the Ed Sullivan Theater, the historic Manhattan stage both men helped define across decades of television history.

After a lengthy standing ovation and a powerful “Seven Nation Army” musical intro, Letterman stepped into the spotlight, immediately leaning into the tension surrounding CBS and Colbert’s exit.

Letterman Fires Back at CBS

“Well, you know what happened backstage? I’m standing backstage, a guy comes over, he says he’s from CBS and he fires me. What is going on over there?!”

The crowd erupted as Letterman continued mixing humor with pointed frustration over the network’s decisions and legacy.

“I have every right to be pissed off, so I’ll be pissed off here a little bit,”

He then turned reflective, emphasizing the legacy he believes was built inside the theater.

“This theater, you folks wouldn’t be in this theater if it weren’t for me, and Stephen wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for me, and we rebuilt this theater, and then Stephen came in, and look at this? It’s like the Bellagio. But, listen… as we all understand, you can take a man’s show, you can’t take a man’s voice.”

Then came the unexpected pivot that reignited the room.

“What I’m really worried about is: What will become of the Jimmys? Are they going to be alright?”

Colbert quickly fired back with a darkly comedic twist.

“We’ve got a plan to put them in a captive breeding program,”

From Nostalgia to Chaos: The CBS Roof Incident

What began as nostalgia soon escalated into pure spectacle. Letterman, still in full comedic command, asked Colbert about ownership of the stage furniture. When told CBS owned it, Letterman took matters into his own hands.

He arranged for stagehands to remove the couches, then joined Colbert in a surreal transition from studio to rooftop. The two comedians moved to the top of the Ed Sullivan Theater, where the night took a chaotic turn described as “wanton destruction of CBS property.”

From above the city streets, furniture began flying.

Couches were tossed off the roof onto a massive CBS logo below. A desk chair followed. Then came watermelons. And finally, a wedding cake, adding absurdity to an already unforgettable scene.

For viewers and fans of late-night television, the moment blurred the line between farewell tribute and anarchic performance art, turning Colbert’s final chapter into one of the most talked-about television sendoffs in recent memory.
