Former President Joe Biden is experiencing a worsening battle with prostate cancer, his son Hunter Biden said in a BBC interview. He described the disease as having spread to his bones and beyond and saying it has become “very painful” and “very debilitating.”

The 83-year-old former president was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in May 2025, less than four months after leaving the White House.

Biden’s spokesman declined Aug. 8 to comment on Hunter Biden’s interview.

The latest public description of Biden’s condition represents a significant update from the former president’s initial disclosure that his cancer had already metastasized to his bones.

Joe Biden Cancer Diagnosis

Biden announced his diagnosis in May 2025 after doctors discovered a prostate nodule while evaluating him for increasing urinary symptoms.

His personal office said at the time that Biden had been diagnosed with prostate cancer characterized by evidence of metastasis to the bone. A Gleason score helps doctors assess how abnormal cancer cells appear and how aggressively the cancer is likely to behave. A score of 9 is considered high-grade and indicates an aggressive cancer.

His office also said the cancer appeared to be hormone-sensitive, meaning it could potentially be managed with treatments designed to interfere with hormones that help prostate cancer grow.

By October 2025, Biden’s spokesman said the former president was receiving radiation treatment and hormone therapy.

Hunter Biden’s latest comments indicate that the disease has progressed further. Speaking to BBC’s Newsnight, Hunter said, “The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further.” He said the condition was causing his father significant pain and debilitating him in many respects.

The extent of the cancer’s further spread has not been independently detailed by Biden’s doctors in a public medical report.

A Former President Facing a Serious Health Battle

Biden was the oldest person to serve as president, taking office at age 78 in January 2021 and leaving the White House in January 2025.

During his presidency, Biden’s physical health and mental acuity became subjects of intense political and public scrutiny. Those concerns increased following his June 2024 debate performance against Donald Trump, after which Biden eventually ended his campaign for a second term.

Despite his cancer diagnosis, Biden has continued making occasional public appearances. In June 2026, he and former first lady Jill Biden attended the dedication of Barack Obama’s presidential center in Chicago. Biden served as Obama’s vice president from 2009 through 2017.

Joe and Jill Biden continue to maintain their longtime home base in Wilmington, Delaware, although their exact current whereabouts have not been publicly disclosed. The couple has continued to make occasional public appearances and travel for events since leaving the White House.

Their June appearance at the Obama Presidential Center was one of Biden’s more prominent public outings in 2026. Recent reporting has not established that the Bidens have permanently relocated from Delaware or that Biden is currently hospitalized.

The family has otherwise kept details about Biden’s treatment and day-to-day health relatively private. That privacy makes Hunter Biden’s comments among the most significant recent public updates on the former president’s condition.

Joe Biden Preparing a Presidential Memoir

Biden also is moving forward with plans to publish a presidential memoir. His book, “Promise Me, America,” is scheduled for release Nov. 17, 2026, following the November midterm elections.

The memoir is expected to address major decisions during his presidency, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, the Jan. 6, 2021, and the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Biden will also review the wars in Afghanistan and Ukraine and his decision to seek another presidential term before eventually ending his campaign.

The book will provide another opportunity for Biden to discuss his four years in office and the political controversies surrounding his presidency as he simultaneously faces a serious and increasingly advanced illness.
