A Career That Began Before Adulthood

Panettiere's path to fame started early — remarkably early — and never really slowed down. She built a career spanning both television and film, becoming a familiar presence in American living rooms as Claire Bennet on the superpowered drama "Heroes" and later as ambitious country star Juliette Barnes on "Nashville," roles that bookended a career defined by reinvention.

Her filmography reached further still, with credits in "Remember the Titans," "Raising Helen," "Ice Princess" and "Scream 4" — a résumé that moved fluidly between family dramas, teen comedies and horror.

Speaking Her Truth in a Memoir

Behind the polished image, Panettiere had long been candid about the toll that early fame and adult struggle took on her. This past May, she released a memoir titled "This Is Me: A Reckoning," pulling back the curtain on a life that, from the outside, looked charmed. According to the book's synopsis, she used its pages to offer readers a rare, unguarded look into her private battles — postpartum depression, addiction and the long road to recovery, trauma, domestic abuse, and profound loss.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya Klitschko, born in 2014 during her relationship with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, her ex-fiancé.

Opening Up About Addiction and Motherhood

In a 2022 interview with "Good Morning America," Panettiere spoke with unusual candor about the blurred lines between her struggles with alcoholism and postpartum depression — two crises that seemed to feed into each other until she could barely tell where one ended and the other began.

"I didn't know where the alcoholism was ending and the postpartum was beginning," she said at the time. "And I ran myself pretty ragged."

She acknowledged the period following her time on "Nashville" had been especially hard, adding that the years before that show had carried their own difficulties. "I just needed a break," she said.

A Family Marked by Repeated Loss

Tragedy had already touched the Panettiere family once before. Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died suddenly in February 2023 at age 28, with his family attributing his death to cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, combined with aortic valve complications.

Hayden never hid the weight that loss left on her. Speaking to People two years after her brother's death, she said plainly, "I will always be heartbroken about it." She added, "I will never be able to get over it. No matter how many years go by, I will never get over his loss."

A Birthday That Never Came

Panettiere was set to turn 37 on Friday — a milestone that, instead of being celebrated, now marks the days since her passing, a painfully close reminder of a life cut short.
