A year-long investigation just landed on the Los Angeles Clippers like a full-court press with nowhere to escape. The NBA unveiled sweeping sanctions against the team Wednesday, including a $30 million fine and a one-year ban for team owner Steve Ballmer, after investigators uncovered evidence the Clippers had violated the league's salary cap rules by arranging off-court business deals for star forward Kawhi Leonard.

The Full Scope of the Penalties

The findings emerged from a year-long probe conducted by law firm Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz, and the resulting punishment was severe by any measure. The NBA stripped the Clippers of five first-round draft picks and levied a $30 million fine against the organization itself. Ballmer, meanwhile, was banned from all league and team activities for a full year — a rare and significant penalty for someone at the ownership level. Leonard himself was ordered to pay $700,000 to the league, though he avoided the far more drastic outcome of having his contract voided entirely.

Commissioner Silver's Response

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver didn't mince words in addressing the scandal. "The NBA's collectively bargained system for determining player compensation is a fundamental component of the basketball competition that the league oversees for the benefit of the teams and players and ultimately the fans," Silver said in a statement. "I am deeply disappointed by the flagrant violations of our rules and by the Clippers' institutional and leadership failures that led to this misconduct. The severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations."

How the Salary Cap System Works — and How It Was Allegedly Broken

The NBA's collective bargaining agreement imposes a strict salary cap on every team, calculated based on the league's projected income for the upcoming year — a system designed to keep competitive balance across the league rather than letting the wealthiest franchises simply outspend everyone else for talent.

Where the Scandal Began

Scrutiny first fell on the Clippers roughly a year ago, after investigative reporter Pablo Torre reported that the team had arranged endorsement deals designed to pay Leonard without those payments counting against the salary cap when he originally signed with the team back in 2019 — allegations that, if true, would represent exactly the kind of workaround the cap system is meant to prevent.

What Investigators Found

Wachtell's formal investigation largely corroborated Torre's original reporting, finding that the Clippers facilitated deals connecting Leonard to four companies that already held pre-existing business relationships with the team: Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics and Lockton Insurance — a pattern suggesting the arrangements were engineered specifically to funnel compensation to Leonard outside the bounds of his official contract.

Representatives for the Clippers did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday.
