ATLANTA — The WNBA Finals ended in heartbreak for the Atlanta Dream. Veteran forward DeWanna Bonner's emotional message following the team's Game 7 defeat to the Golden State Valkyries has drawn an outpouring of support from teammates, former teammates and players across the league.

After 17 seasons in professional basketball, the 39-year-old is facing renewed questions about her future following Atlanta's 68-63 loss on Oct. 26 at State Farm Arena.

The championship series brought together two teams with very different postseason journeys. The Golden State Valkyries emerged as Atlanta's opponent in the Finals, while the Dream reached the championship round for the first time since 2013.

Although Atlanta ultimately fell short of the title, its postseason run showcased the team's depth, determination and veteran leadership.

For Bonner, the defeat represented more than the end of a championship opportunity. It also marked a potentially defining moment in a career that has included numerous accomplishments and one of the WNBA's most impressive postseason records.

DeWanna Bonner Breaks Her Silence After Atlanta's Finals Defeat

Days after the deciding game, Bonner shared a lengthy and emotional message on Instagram, reflecting on her experience with Atlanta and the relationships she developed during her time with the organization.

"17 years in this league, and to still experience this kind of love, energy, and excitement is something I'll never take for granted," Bonner wrote.

"This move to Atlanta was life changing, far beyond winning or losing a championship! The happiness and joy that came with this city/team was unmatched!"

Bonner also thanked the Dream organization, her teammates and Atlanta supporters for welcoming her throughout the season.

She described the connections she developed with the team as lasting relationships and expressed gratitude for the support she received from fans from the moment she arrived.

However, one part of her statement attracted particular attention.

"And as for what's next? Just remember, if you didn't hear it from me, you haven't heard it yet," she wrote.

The comment immediately revived speculation about whether Bonner intends to continue playing or is considering retirement.

Angel Reese and Other WNBA Stars Show Their Support

Bonner's emotional announcement prompted an immediate response from teammates and players who have shared the court with her throughout her career.

Angel Reese, Bonner's Atlanta teammate and one of the league's prominent young stars, was among the first to respond.

"A honor to play with you no matter what next year looks like," Reese wrote.

Te-Hina Paopao also expressed her appreciation, commenting, "so much love for you ms.deanna ❤️".

Saniya Rivers, who previously played alongside Bonner with the Connecticut Sun, added a heartfelt message.

"Love you DB," Rivers wrote.

Atlanta rookie guard Isobel Borlase also joined the conversation, posting, "thankyou DB."

The messages highlighted the respect Bonner has earned throughout her career, particularly from younger players who have benefited from her experience and leadership.

How Atlanta and Golden State Reached the WNBA Finals

The 2026 WNBA Finals matchup featured the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries.

Atlanta's appearance in the championship series represented a significant achievement for the franchise. The Dream had not reached the Finals since 2013, making the postseason run an important milestone for the organization and its supporters.

The Dream's road to the championship round included a major semifinal victory over the New York Liberty.

Bonner played a particularly important role after Allisha Gray injured her hand during Game 1 of the semifinal series.

She responded with 23 points and nine rebounds in a victory over New York. Bonner followed that performance with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the series-clinching game, helping Atlanta secure its place in the Finals.

Her contributions went beyond the box score. Teammates credited her experience, leadership and postseason composure with helping the team navigate the pressure of an extended playoff run.

Golden State, meanwhile, advanced to the championship matchup and ultimately prevailed in the deciding game.

The Valkyries defeated Atlanta 68-63 in Game 7 on Oct. 26 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, ending the Dream's championship hopes.

The narrow five-point margin reflected the competitive nature of the deciding contest, although Atlanta was unable to generate enough offense to complete its championship run.

Although Bonner was instrumental in Atlanta's semifinal success, her role during the championship series was more limited.

Bonner in the Finals

She did not play more than 20 minutes in any Finals game and finished the series with 26 points.

One of her notable performances came in Game 2, when she recorded nine points and four steals. Atlanta secured the first Finals game victory in franchise history during that contest.

Her playing time was more limited in Game 7. Bonner finished with four points in 14 minutes as Golden State secured the championship.

Despite the disappointing finish, her postseason contributions added to an already remarkable career.

Bonner became the first player in WNBA history to record 600 defensive rebounds in the playoffs. She also extended her record for most postseason games played to 110.

Those accomplishments further demonstrated her longevity and consistency in one of the most competitive professional basketball leagues.

How Bonner Ended Up in Atlanta

Bonner's arrival in Atlanta came after the Phoenix Mercury agreed to a contract buyout.

She cleared waivers on Aug. 26, and the Dream signed her the following day.

The veteran forward said Atlanta appealed to her because of its fast-paced playing style, emphasis on three-point shooting and geographic proximity to her hometown.

"Great basketball, great location for me at the end of my career," Bonner said when discussing the move.

The decision proved beneficial for both sides.

Atlanta gained a veteran postseason performer, while Bonner found an opportunity to compete for a championship and contribute to a team with emerging young talent.

Her leadership became particularly valuable during the semifinal series against New York, when Atlanta needed additional offensive production following Gray's injury.

Retirement Questions Remain as Bonner Becomes a Free Agent

Bonner's contract with Atlanta expired following the Finals, leaving her an unrestricted free agent.

At 39, the veteran faces an important decision about whether to pursue another season or conclude her professional basketball career.

She has not publicly confirmed her plans.

If Bonner decides to continue playing, she will have an opportunity to add to her 8,243 career points. She currently ranks third on the WNBA's all-time scoring list, behind Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles.

Her career longevity, postseason experience and ability to contribute at both ends of the court could make her an attractive option for teams seeking veteran leadership.

However, retirement would also represent a fitting opportunity to reflect on a career spanning 17 seasons.

Atlanta Dream Already Looking Toward Another Championship Run

While Bonner's future remains uncertain, Atlanta's returning players have indicated that the team's core is expected to remain together.

Following the Game 7 defeat, Reese, Jordin Canada and Allisha Gray expressed confidence in the group's ability to return and compete again.

For the Dream, reaching the Finals was an important step toward establishing the franchise as a consistent championship contender.

The experience could provide valuable motivation heading into the next season, particularly for younger players who experienced the pressure of a championship series for the first time.

Whether Bonner will be part of that effort remains unanswered.

For now, her emotional Instagram statement offers the clearest indication of where she stands: She appreciates what Atlanta gave her, values the relationships she developed and is not ready to let others announce her next move.

After 17 seasons in the WNBA, Bonner appears determined to make that decision on her own terms.
