Janelle Brown's latest revelation about the future of Sister Wives has added another chapter to the long-running reality television family's turbulent history.

The TLC personality says she learned through an email, rather than a personal phone call or advance conversation, that her former husband, Kody Brown, and his wife, Robyn Brown, would not return for Season 21 of the popular reality series. The unexpected announcement reportedly surprised Janelle and several of the Brown family's children, underscoring just how distant relationships have become among members of the once closely connected plural family.

In an exclusive interview with People published Nov. 2, Janelle, 57, described her reaction to receiving the news.

"I actually got an email that they weren't coming back, and I'm like, 'Oh, wow. Okay,'" she said.

Janelle also acknowledged that she has not spoken with Kody or Robyn in a considerable amount of time. Their last interaction occurred after the family sold property featured during the previous season.

The revelation offers another glimpse into the complicated relationships that have defined Sister Wives for more than a decade.

A Reality Show That Changed the Conversation About Polygamy

Sister Wives premiered on TLC in 2010, introducing television audiences to Kody Brown and his unconventional family structure.

The series originally followed Kody's relationships with four women: Meri Brown, Janelle Brown, Christine Brown and Robyn Brown. The family presented its plural marriage arrangement as a shared commitment built around raising children, maintaining relationships and managing the challenges of living in a large household.

The show attracted considerable attention because it offered viewers an inside look at a family structure rarely portrayed in mainstream American television.

Over the years, however, the program evolved from documenting the family's daily routines and celebrations into an examination of marital disagreements, financial decisions, jealousy, emotional distance and family estrangement.

The Browns' relocation from Utah to Nevada and later Arizona became major storylines. Their property investments, family gatherings and disagreements over living arrangements also generated considerable viewer interest.

As the years passed, the relationships between Kody and his wives deteriorated, eventually leading to three separations and a dramatic change in the family's television presence.

Three Relationships End as Robyn Remains With Kody

Kody's relationships with his original three wives eventually collapsed.

Christine Brown announced her separation from Kody in November 2021 after approximately 25 years together. She later married David Woolley in October 2023 and has continued building a new life.

Janelle confirmed her separation from Kody in December 2022. Their relationship had lasted nearly three decades, and they share six children.

Meri Brown, Kody's first wife, announced in January 2023 that their relationship had ended.

Robyn remained committed to Kody throughout the breakdown of his other marriages.

Kody and Robyn originally married spiritually in 2010. In 2014, Kody legally divorced Meri and married Robyn legally, allowing him to adopt Robyn's three children from her previous marriage.

The changing family structure became one of the central subjects of the series, with viewers watching the emotional consequences unfold.

Janelle's Six Children Were Also Surprised

Janelle and Kody share six children: Logan, Madison, Hunter, Garrison, Gabriel and Savanah.

Janelle said her children were surprised to learn that Kody and Robyn would no longer participate in the TLC series.

However, she acknowledged that many of the children already had limited relationships with their father.

"They really were surprised," Janelle said. "But again, most of my children don't really have a relationship with their father, so it was kind of just news really."

The family's difficulties have been especially painful because the children have grown up in front of television cameras.

The Brown family's children have included:

• Meri and Kody: Their only child is Leon Brown.
• Janelle and Kody: Their six children are Logan, Madison, Hunter, Garrison, Gabriel and Savanah.
• Christine and Kody: Their six children are Aspyn, Mykelti, Paedon, Gwendlyn, Ysabel and Truely.
• Robyn and Kody: Robyn brought three children from her previous marriage, Dayton, Aurora and Breanna, whom Kody adopted. The couple also welcomed Solomon and Ariella together.

Together, the family has 18 children, including Robyn's three children from her previous relationship.

One of the family's most painful losses occurred in March 2024, when Janelle and Kody's son Garrison Brown died at age 25.

His death brought renewed attention to the emotional challenges experienced by the Brown family and the importance of maintaining supportive relationships among family members.

Kody and Robyn's Departure Marks a New Era

Kody and Robyn did not return for Season 21, which premiered Oct. 4 on TLC. The couple has not publicly explained their decision to leave the series.

The departure represents a significant change for a program that spent 16 years documenting Kody's plural marriage and the lives of his wives and children.

Janelle's comments also suggest that the news was not communicated through close family relationships.

She said she has not contacted Kody or Robyn about their decision, although she expressed hope that they are doing well.

The news comes amid continuing discussions about the breakdown of the family's relationships. In a recent episode, Christine Brown Woolley suggested that Robyn played a role in Kody and Meri's legal divorce, a theory that has circulated among viewers for years.

The family's complicated history continues to generate discussion among longtime fans, particularly regarding Kody's relationships with his adult children.

Janelle Looks Toward a Fresh Start

Despite the unexpected announcement, Janelle appears determined to concentrate on the future rather than revisit old disagreements.

She described the couple's departure as the end of an era but also suggested that the change could create opportunities for everyone to move forward.

"It's felt like the end of an era, but also too, I feel like, going forward now," she said. "There's so many beautiful things happening for all of us."

Janelle has also begun a new romantic relationship. She introduced her boyfriend, Pete, publicly in August, marking another development in her life following her separation from Kody.

Christine has also moved forward, marrying Woolley and establishing a new chapter outside her former plural marriage.

Meri, meanwhile, has been exploring new opportunities and considering what comes next in her personal life.

From 2010 to Now

For viewers who have followed the Browns since 2010, the latest developments represent more than a casting change. They mark the conclusion of a significant chapter in a family whose relationships, celebrations, disagreements and heartbreaks have unfolded before millions of television viewers.

With Kody and Robyn absent, the focus of Sister Wives is shifting toward the three women who ended their relationships with Kody and the lives they are building independently.

The question now is whether the series can maintain its audience appeal while telling a new story centered on independence, healing, family relationships and second chances.

For Janelle, at least, the unexpected email may have delivered one more reminder that her future no longer depends on Kody Brown.
