The Brown University shooter has been identified following a nearly weeklong manhunt that kept Providence, Rhode Island, on edge and raised new questions about motive, prevention, and campus security.

Authorities say the shooter opened fire inside a classroom at Brown University on Saturday afternoon, killing two students and wounding nine others before escaping into nearby streets.

According to Providence police, the suspect has been identified as Claudio Neves Valente, a former Brown University student and Portuguese national. A warrant was issued for his arrest six days after the attack, as investigators worked through limited evidence and grainy surveillance footage released to the public.

Criminal Profiler: “Extremely Angry” but Afraid of Capture

Criminal profiler John Kelly described the Brown University shooter as an “extremely angry” loner who was careful to plan his escape and did not want to die during the attack.

“He took great pains to scope out the area and secure an escape route. Why? Because he’s scared of getting caught,” Kelly told Fox News.
“So it looks like a cause he’s not willing to die for, but a cause he’s extremely angry over,” Kelly added.
