“September’s full moon has always symbolized a turning point — from summer’s abundance to the preparations of autumn,” the Almanac notes.
Why This Moon Will Be a Blood Moon
This year’s Corn Moon is also a Blood Moon, occurring during a total lunar eclipse. When the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter blue wavelengths and leaving the longer red ones to cast a reddish glow across the lunar surface.
According to NASA’s SpacePlace, “the Moon looks red during a total lunar eclipse because of the way Earth’s atmosphere bends and scatters sunlight, bathing the Moon in the colors of all the world’s sunrises and sunsets.”
