In James Gunn's highly anticipated film, "Superman: Legacy" David Corenswet is set to star as Superman. And Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped for the role of Lois Lane.

DC Studios made the exciting announcement today. Corenswet, known for his breakout role in Netflix's "The Politician," will take on the iconic role of Superman.

Acclaimed for portraying the title character in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," Rachel Brosnahan brings Lois Lane to life on the big screen.

James Gunn, who played a significant role in shaping the new DC Universe, will be directing. And he confirmed the casting choices. 

Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Accurate! They are not only both incredible actors but also wonderful people." 

Previously, Gunn had mentioned that Corenswet and Brosnahan were contenders for the roles alongside Nicholas Hoult, further building anticipation for the film's casting choices.

The announcement of "Superman: Legacy" came earlier this year as part of Gunn and Safran's revamped DCU, with the first chapter titled "Gods and Monsters."

DC Studios aims to revitalize its cinematic universe amidst well-publicized struggles, including potential box office disappointment with "The Flash." 

The studio turned to James Gunn and Peter Safran to bring a fresh perspective.

 "Superman: Legacy" will play a crucial role in setting the tone for the new DC Universe (DCU), with Gunn emphasizing that it will not simply imitate the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The plot summary for the film has been described as the journey of Superman (Corenswet) as he navigates the reconciliation of his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas. 

Naturally, Superman embodies truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that often overlooks such virtues.

Superman: Legacy universe-building begins

This ambitious plan sets the stage for an eight-to-ten-year vision, where actors are expected to sign decade-long contracts for movie and TV appearances. Additional upcoming projects in the DCU include "The Brave and the Bold," "Swamp Thing," and more.

With James Gunn now at the helm of DC Studios, fans have eagerly questioned how he intends to differentiate his approach from the well-established formula of the MCU. 

Gunn's previous work in the superhero genre, notably with Marvel Studios, has garnered him praise and recognition. As he takes on this new role, fans are excited to witness his creative vision coming to life in the DC Universe.

Gunn made an appearance on actor Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You. And he explained how each approaches secret identities differently. 

The MCU doesn’t necessarily deal much with secret identities and the resulting character duality, except in the case of Spider-Man. 

Superman and Batman live in vastly different cities like Gotham and Metropolis. These aren’t known quantities like cities within the MCU, such as Marvel’s favorite playground, New York. 

The DCU will be developed with more of an inspiring fantasy element. Gunn went on to express his excitement to start world-building within the DCU. 

Superman: Legacy's release date is set for July 11, 2025.
