The Walt Disney Co. has agreed to pay $43.25 million to settle a class-action lawsuit accusing the company of systematically underpaying thousands of women in middle management compared to their male counterparts. The settlement, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, resolves a five-year legal battle alleging violations of California’s Equal Pay Act and the Fair Employment and Housing Act.

Details of the Class Action and Settlement

The suit, initiated in 2019, was led by nine women representing a class of nearly 9,000 current and former Disney employees in California. The plaintiffs alleged that Disney paid women less than men for substantially similar roles, overlooked women for promotions, and assigned them additional work without corresponding increases in compensation.

Under the settlement, Disney has committed to several measures aimed at promoting pay equity. In addition to the financial payout, the entertainment giant will:

  • Retain an industrial and organizational psychologist to train personnel involved in compensation decisions.
  • Engage a labor economist to conduct pay equity analyses for its California employees over the next three years.
