U.S. prosecutors have recently addressed allegations from Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team, which accused government agents of leaking confidential information, including surveillance footage, to the media. Combs’ team claims that footage showing the music mogul assaulting his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, was illegally disclosed by federal agents to influence public opinion.
Prosecutors Refute Evidence of Government Involvement
In a Wednesday filing submitted to Manhattan’s federal court, prosecutors argued that Combs’ attorneys failed to provide adequate proof that any leak originated from the federal grand jury investigating Combs. Prosecutors assert that Combs and his team already knew the video footage had come from an alternate source.
The disputed video, recorded in 2016, emerged publicly in May when CNN released hotel surveillance showing Combs in a physical altercation with Cassie near a hotel’s elevator. Prosecutors emphasized that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents, whom Combs’ defense accuses, had no authority over the grand jury proceedings or the acquisition of this footage. The court filing read, “The defendant baselessly accuses ‘Department of Homeland Security’ agents… of secretly obtaining the Intercontinental Video unbeknownst to the prosecutors.”
Government Denies Possessing Video Prior to CNN Release
In addition, the government disclosed that it had been unsuccessful in securing any video evidence of the alleged hotel assault before CNN released the footage. This directly challenges Combs’ accusations, as his legal team argues the government deliberately leaked grand jury materials to prejudice potential jurors.
