Rep. Maxwell Frost said he was assaulted during the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, describing the incident as a politically and racially motivated attack that led to the arrest of the suspect.

The Florida Democrat said the assault occurred late Friday at a private party connected to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City. In a social media post, Frost said a man told him that former President Donald Trump was going to deport him before punching him in the face. Frost said the attacker shouted racist remarks before fleeing the scene.

“I am okay,” Frost wrote, adding that the suspect was later taken into custody.

Police Describe Arrest and Charges

The Park City Police Department said officers responded to a reported disturbance at a private event after a man allegedly forced his way into the venue without an invitation. Police identified the suspect as Christian Young.

According to authorities, Young assaulted Frost and another woman inside the venue before security personnel intervened. Police said Young was arrested and booked into jail on charges of simple assault and aggravated burglary.

Law enforcement officials did not release further details about the suspect’s background or whether additional charges may be filed.

Reports Cite Racist Remarks

Frost linked to a media report describing the incident as a possible hate crime. That report said the suspect had made racially charged comments inside a restroom before striking a person of color at the party.

Security staff detained the suspect until police arrived, according to accounts from the scene.

Democratic Leaders Condemn Attack

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the assault, calling it “terrifying” and urging prosecutors to pursue the case aggressively.

“Hate and political violence have no place in our country,” Jeffries said in a statement. “The entire House Democratic Caucus stands with Congressman Frost.”

The incident adds to growing concern among lawmakers about threats and violence directed at elected officials amid heightened political tensions nationwide.

Sundance Festival Responds

The Sundance Film Festival said the assault occurred at an event not officially affiliated with the festival but condemned the violence.

“We strongly condemn last night’s assault and abhor any form of violence, harassment, or hate speech,” festival organizers said, adding that such behavior runs counter to the festival’s values.

The Sundance Film Festival began on January 22 and runs through February 1. This year marks the final time the event will be held in Park City, with the festival scheduled to move to Boulder, Colorado, in 2027.
