The U.S. is bracing for a possible Government Shutdown as lawmakers in Washington remain gridlocked over a new funding bill. Unless Congress reaches an agreement, the government will run out of money at midnight on Tuesday, September 30.

This would trigger widespread disruptions from closed national parks to delayed flights and mass furloughs of federal workers.

How We Got Here

Republicans control the House, Senate, and the presidency, but under Senate rules, most major legislation requires 60 votes to pass. With only 53 Republican senators, the GOP needs Democratic support to move forward on any spending package.

So far, both parties have introduced competing proposals. The Republican bill would extend funding through November 21 and add increased security funding for lawmakers following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The Democratic bill, by contrast, funds the government through October 31 and rolls back Medicaid cuts while making Affordable Care Act subsidies permanent.
