Two people were killed and three others critically injured during a high school boys’ hockey game Monday afternoon in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, authorities said. The suspected shooter also died from what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident took place at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena, where multiple schools had gathered to celebrate senior night. Pawtucket is located approximately 45 miles south of Boston.

Suspect Identified and Motive
Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves identified the shooter as Robert Dorgan, born in 1969, who also used the name Roberta Esposito. Police said the shooting appeared to be a targeted incident related to a family dispute. No details about the victims have been released.

Chief Goncalves credited a bystander for helping end the shooting quickly. “A Good Samaritan stepped in and interjected in this scene, and that’s probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event,” she said.

Federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to assist local and state law enforcement. The FBI said there is no ongoing threat to the public but advised people to avoid the area as the investigation continues.

Witness Accounts
Several witnesses described confusion and fear as the shooting unfolded.

Olin Lawrence, a high school player on the ice at the time, said he ran to the locker room for safety. “We pressed against the door and just tried to stay safe down in there. It was very scary. We were very nervous. It was a lot of shots,” he said.

Melissa Dunn, the mother of a sophomore goalie, said she initially mistook the sounds for skates hitting the boards. “Your first thought is, ‘Where’s my kid?’” she said. Dunn ran back inside the arena and saw first responders performing CPR in the stands. “It was just really disturbing,” she added.

Students Accounted For
Officials confirmed that students from several schools, including Coventry, East Providence, and Saint Raphael Academy, were participating in the senior night event. Some teams included students from multiple districts.

Coventry Public Schools Superintendent Don Cowart confirmed all district students were accounted for and safe. Providence Country Day also reported that students, parents, and staff present at the arena were unharmed. Police officers remained with the students while reunification plans were coordinated.

City and State Response
Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien called the shooting “a terrible tragedy” and said the city is working closely with state officials and the attorney general’s office. “What should have been a joyful occasion … was instead marked by violence and fear. Tonight we are a city in mourning,” he said.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said the state is increasing mental health support for those affected. “Our state is grieving again. As governor, a parent, and a former coach, my heart breaks for the victims, families, and everyone impacted,” he said.

The city and state have set up a 211 hotline for counseling and referrals, and anyone in emotional distress is encouraged to call or text 988. Grief counseling is being offered at the Blackstone Valley Visitor’s Center starting Tuesday, with services expected to continue as needed. Family Service of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps Trauma Response Team, and the American Red Cross are assisting with support.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing as law enforcement pieces together the events leading to the shooting.
