Novelist James Patterson, known for co-authoring many of his over 200 books since 1976, has turned to Substack for his latest creative ventures.

The prolific author began his career as a mystery writer. Now he publishes dozens of titles a year in a variety of genres.

While some have suggested he should explore AI as a way to increase his publishing output, Patterson has chosen a more hands-on and personalized approach in this new chapter of his career.

James Patterson has no interest in using AI. He claims it would be boring. He is still most curious about and fascinated by people.

What is Substack?

Substack is an online platform that allows creators to publish digital newsletters directly to subscribers.

Founded in 2017 in San Francisco, the platform provides infrastructure for content creation, including payment processing, analytics, and design.

While initially focused on newsletters, Substack aims to attract a wider variety of creators by offering more diverse content options.

The Hungry Dogs Project

Patterson recently launched a new project called Hungry Dogs on Substack. Explaining the name, Patterson said, "Hungry dogs run faster," a phrase his grandmother used. His decision to join Substack is largely driven by the freedom the platform offers.

"With Substack, we're totally free, we get to do whatever the hell we want to do. So, I can write opinion pieces. I can write whatever the hell I want to write, and that's liberating," Patterson said.

Patterson also plans to use his Substack to share opinion pieces, advice on writing, and video interviews with authors he admires, including co-authors like Dolly Parton and Bill Clinton.

According to a recent Business Edition article, Patterson has a lot to share, and he’s ready to "tell all" on topics ranging from Hollywood to Washington D.C.

Hollywood Motivations

Many of Patterson’s books have been adapted into films, and he has some strong opinions about the industry.

He believes Hollywood is driven by three motivations: fear of failure, indifference, and the desire for continuous improvement.

"Mostly, that's my state," Patterson claims, referring to his drive to make things better.

A Power Tool for Writers

For Patterson, Substack represents a "power tool" for writers. "I don't like the word empower, so I won't use empower," he said, "But it's kind of a power tool for writers, where there's nobody between you and the audience."

He appreciates the creative freedom that the platform provides, allowing him to publish content without restrictions.

Patterson’s Substack will also feature a two-part interview with former President Bill Clinton, showcasing the variety of content he plans to offer.
