In Florida, Amendment 4, also known as the Right to Abortion Initiative, is on the ballot this November. Should the measure receive at least 60% of the vote, Florida's state constitution will be updated to permit abortion access before fetal viability. Likewise, the success of Amendment 4 would engender an automatic dissolution of Florida's current six week abortion ban. Across the state, Republicans like Gov. Ron DeSantis are urging residents to vote no on the ballot initiative. Democrats, on the other hand, continue rallying behind Amendment 4, branding GOP leaders as too extreme on abortion. Despite Republicans having a massive voter registration advantage over Democrats in the Sunshine State, recent polling shows most Floridians favor the Right to Abortion Initiative.

New findings on support for Amendment 4

A joint study conducted by Emerson College Polling and The Hill confirms that 55% of likely voters in Florida plan to vote for Amendment 4. This is just shy of the necessary 60% to bring about a constitutional amendment, something Republicans have been pointing out. Only 26% of Floridians told the pollster they'd vote no on the Right to Abortion Initiative. With 20% describing themselves as uncertain about Amendment 4, it is this demographic that will likely make or break the proposal. Florida is one of several states with an abortion measure on the ballot this November. Democrats, ahead of the election, are heavily focusing on the Sunshine State, hoping Amendment 4 will boost left-wing voter turnout, thus helping Vice President Harris, along with Democrats running for House and Senate seats.

A hot button issue that's unlikely to go away

Ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, abortion has become one of the most contentious issues in politics. In fact, Republicans' failure to reap a highly expected 'red wave' in the 2022 midterms was directly attributed to outrage over Roe's demise. Amid this year's political races, Democrats nationwide are continuing to hit Republicans on abortion. GOP members have infamously struggled to fend off these attacks, notwithstanding efforts to paint left-wing officials as the real extremists on this issue. With a Harris vs. Trump debate happening next week, Americans can expect to hear more conversations and talking points surrounding abortion.
