Permanent Daylight-Saving Time: Texas Joins Push for Longer Evenings Nationwide

Texas lawmakers have taken a bold step toward eliminating the biannual ritual of changing clocks by passing a bill that supports Permanent Daylight-Saving Time.

The legislation, which received strong bipartisan support, positions Texas alongside 18 other states that have passed similar measures aimed at keeping clocks forward year-round.

This change cannot take effect until Congress amends the federal Uniform Time Act of 1966, which currently mandates seasonal clock transitions.

“Texans are tired of springing forward and falling back,” said one lawmaker during the debate. “This is about modernizing our lives and aligning with what people overwhelmingly want—more light in the evening.”

The move by Texas adds momentum to national calls for reform. In 2022, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would implement permanent daylight-saving time nationwide. But the bill stalled in the House and has not advanced during the current session of Congress.
