Additional security was allegedly added due to credible threats against Trump from Iran. But Crooks was able to exploit all the vulnerabilities that had been identified days before the event.
Cheatle revealed that the Secret Service had received warnings about a suspicious person multiple times before the shooting.
She also acknowledged that the rooftop from which Crooks fired had been previously identified as a potential security risk. However, no agents were stationed on the roof, raising serious questions about the agency’s preparedness and decision-making.
Resignation and Accountability
In an email to staff, Cheatle expressed regret over the incident, stating, “I take full responsibility for the security lapse. In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.”
Despite this admission, her resignation is unlikely to quell the ongoing scrutiny of the Secret Service, especially with the Democratic National Convention and a busy presidential campaign season ahead.
