The Platform and the Child: The Dark Side of OnlyFans and Its Ties To Human Trafficking

The Reckoning That Has Not Come
OnlyFans is not the first platform to face this reckoning, and the trajectory of its predecessors is instructive. Backpage, the classified advertising website that was one of the primary venues for sex trafficking in the United States for most of a decade, was shut down by federal action in 2018 after years of mounting evidence of its role in facilitating exploitation. Omegle, the anonymous video chat platform, was shut down in 2023 in part due to sustained legal pressure arising from documented cases of child abuse. In both cases, the platforms had spent years insisting that their systems were adequate, that bad actors were the exception, that the harm was being managed. In both cases, they were wrong, and the evidence that they were wrong was extensive and available long before any formal action was taken.
OnlyFans is a larger, more financially formidable entity than either predecessor, and it has adopted a posture of engagement with regulators that Backpage and Omegle never fully managed. It publishes transparency reports. It submits CSAM reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It has, after regulatory pressure, adjusted its age-verification thresholds. These are not nothing. They are also not sufficient, and the gap between the company's public commitments and its operational reality — a gap that is measurable in fines, in documented cases of underage content that remained on the platform for months, in a surveillance infrastructure so porous that a minor's age can be reported directly to the company and still not trigger removal — is a gap that the company has shown no particular urgency to close.
The legal and cultural debate about consensual adult sex work is real, and it is not this story's subject. The adults who use OnlyFans legally, knowingly, and freely have interests that deserve consideration in any policy discussion about the platform's future. But the existence of that debate should not function — as it has too often functioned — as a shield for the company behind which the exploitation of children can be conducted at scale. The argument that tighter regulation would harm legal sex workers is a legitimate argument about a real trade-off. It is not a reason to accept a business model that has been documented, repeatedly and credibly, as enabling the commercial abuse of children.
The company's most powerful defense is that it is not unique — that CSAM exists on every major platform, that the internet is not a safe place for children, that singling out OnlyFans is selective and unfair. There is something to this. The internet is, in the aggregate, a catastrophically under-governed space for children. The platforms that have been most aggressive about policing exploitation — and none of them have been aggressive enough — have at least submitted to a degree of external accountability. OnlyFans has not. Its paywall remains. Its revenues grow. The children behind it remain largely inaccessible to the people who might help them.
