In a resounding victory that surpassed all expectations, former President Donald Trump secured a 30-point win in the Iowa caucus. This sets the stage for a heated GOP nominating contest in 2024. 

The Associated Press declared Trump the winner at 8:32 p.m. EST, which was half-hour into the caucuses. This solidifies his position as the frontrunner to challenge President Biden in the upcoming general election.

Weather Impacts Iowa Caucus

During challenging snowy and subzero conditions, Iowans not only endorsed Trump but also weighed in on the battle for the GOP's top Trump alternative between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina governor turned United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. 

Despite lower-than-usual turnout due to adverse weather conditions, approximately 120,000 Iowans participated. 

The results were a split decision, with DeSantis securing around 21% and Haley about 19%, further dividing the party's anti-Trump faction.

Trump had set ambitious goals, aiming for 50% support, a benchmark no GOP candidate had ever reached.

Surpassing all previous records, Trump garnered an impressive 51% vote with more than 90% of precincts reporting. This historic win showcased Trump's dominance and highlighted the challenge for his rivals to unite against him.

Second Place Finishers

DeSantis, once considered a formidable challenger to Trump, faced a setback after losing momentum following the launch of his campaign in May.

Despite investing time and resources in Iowa, including visits to all 99 counties and key endorsements, DeSantis finished in a close second place, narrowly ahead of Haley.

Haley's strong debate performances propelled her ahead of DeSantis in the final Iowa polls, despite initially polling at just 4% support.

The close race between DeSantis and Haley underscored the intense competition for the position of the GOP's primary alternative to Trump.

Haley's well-funded campaign spent a significant $7.8 million on Iowa advertising in the last two weeks, outspending both DeSantis and Trump. 

Trump, in his victory speech, acknowledged the efforts of DeSantis, Haley, and third-place finisher Vivek Ramaswamy. He emphasized the unity within the party.

Next Stop New Hampshire

The outcome allowed DeSantis to maintain a presence in the race and continue campaigning into the New Hampshire primary, where he currently trails both Haley and Trump.

DeSantis' finance chair expressed confidence in the campaign's ability to go beyond Iowa and compete in the upcoming Super Tuesday primaries.

This sentiment extended to the belief that Trump would still be fit to serve as president even if convicted of a crime, as indicated by 63% of respondents in the National Election Pool entrance poll.

Notably, Trump's support among white evangelicals, a crucial demographic, soared to 53% compared to 22% in 2016.
