Today General Motors (GM) has announced it will help some employees who will be laid off in the near future.

Last month, GM released some major news. They said they would be unallocating (shutting dow) multiple plants with thousands of employees each.

• Assembly plants that will be unallocated in 2019 include:
  • Oshawa Assembly in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
  • Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly in Detroit.
  • Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio.
    
• Propulsion plants that will be unallocated in 2019 include:
  • Baltimore Operations in White Marsh, Maryland.
  • Warren Transmission Operations in Warren, Michigan.

The CEO and Chairman of the company says shutting down those plants is necessary for future success.

“The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “We recognize the need to stay in front of changing market conditions and customer preferences to position our company for long-term success.”

Their announcement today however, gives hope to some of the employees who will lose their jobs. For the hourly employees at the Maryland, Michigan, Ohio and Oshawa, Canada facilities, there are nearly 3,000 jobs jobs available at other United States plants. For other employees at these unallocated plants, there are tuition assistance programs, and training opportunities.

Bara says these new opportunities are thanks to a strong North American economy.

“Strong U.S. and Canadian economies enable us to provide these opportunities now as we position General Motors for long-term success,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “Our focus remains on providing interested employees options to transition including job opportunities at other GM plants. We remain committed to working with local government officials, our unions and each individual to find appropriate opportunities for them.”
