A sense of collective mourning settled over Corry, Pennsylvania, following the tragic news of State Trooper Jacques Rougeau's death in the line of duty.

Often referred to as "Jay," Rougeau was not only a beacon of public safety but also a valued friend and teammate to many in the local community.

Many recall Rougeau as a former high school cross country athlete of exceptional caliber.

Brent Benedict, a former teammate, reflected, "Jay was not just a great athlete but also a remarkable person.

The news of his passing has left us all shaken." Chad Wiler, another teammate from those early years, echoed this sentiment, sharing that Rougeau’s charisma and kindness touched everyone.

"His heart of gold was evident in every interaction," Wiler shared. "He would reach out to everyone on the team, ensuring that no one ever felt left out." Even as Wiler relocated to the state college area, he could count on Rougeau to provide recommendations and a hope to reunite someday.

"He was a supportive figure, a listening ear, and the soul of our team, always ready to lighten the mood," Wiler remembered.

The tragic loss of Jacques Rougeau has sent ripples of sorrow and heartfelt prayers for his friends, family, and former teammates who remember him fondly.

The tragic loss occurred in the wake of a multi-scene shootout involving a man, identified as Brandon Stine, who allegedly attacked police vehicles outside a central Pennsylvania barracks.

In an unfortunate series of events that Colonel Christopher Paris likened to "a dangerous game of cat and mouse," Stine fled the scene, sparking a state-wide manhunt with the Pennsylvania State Police.

Lt. James Wagner first confronted Stine, sustaining critical injuries in the exchange of gunfire.

Witnesses and citizens came forward to assist Lt. Wagner, who was later hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

Jacques Rougeau, while patrolling the outskirts of the borough, tragically encountered Stine in what authorities described as an ambush.

Stine fired through Rougeau's windshield, striking and fatally injuring him, as shared by Lt. Colonel George Givens.

The shooter managed to escape again, fleeing into Walker Township's rural residential area.

"Our troopers put themselves in the line of fire to protect their fellow Pennsylvanians," Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said, ordering all Commonwealth flags to fly at half-staff in Rougeau's honor.

The game of cat and mouse ended tragically when police cornered Stine, who had become trapped against a row of trees.

After another firefight, Stine was shot and killed, marking the end of what Lt. Colonel Givens described as one of the most intense gunfights he had ever witnessed.
