In the United States, there are simple protocols Americans must follow, should they wish to travel via air with firearms.

First, their weapon must be placed in a locked, hard-sided container, with the key on the traveler at all times. This container should also be within the checked luggage of the passenger, seeing as firearms are not allowed in carry-on bags or personal items.

Finally, anyone taking a firearm through the airport must declare it to the gate agent accordingly upon checking their luggage for the flight.

Despite the relative ease of these rules, there are still certain individuals who choose to disregard them. Some seem to think they'll be able to easily get a firearm through airport checkpoints via their carry-on luggage.

People are quickly learning this isn't the case, according to reports released by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The latest from TSA on Americans improperly traveling with firearms

During this year's first quarter, 1,503 firearms were caught at US airport checkpoints. This means travelers with these specific firearms didn't adhere to the regulations of air transit with said weapons.

TSA also revealed that many of the guns they discovered at checkpoints turned out to be loaded with ammunition. Granted, the amount of people traveling with firearms in this capacity has reduced since 2023. Yet, the 93% of loaded firearms discovered at airport checkpoints still matches the amount of loaded guns discovered in 2023.

By TSA standards, confiscated firearms are deemed as "loaded" if the ammunition and firearm are both within reach of the traveler. Like with firearms, passengers traveling with ammunition are required to keep it in a locked case, within a checked bag, and declare it to the gate agent of their respective airline.

What happens when Americans travel with firearms improperly?

Some people may think it's no big deal if they put their guns in their carry-on bags or personal items. They would be mistaken, however.

When TSA discovers firearms at airport checkpoints, they inform law enforcement. Depending on the circumstances, a traveler who fails to check their firearm(s) with the airline and declare it in a checked bag may end up facing arrest or punitive fines.

All in all, Americans should adhere to TSA guidelines whenever they plan to travel with guns or ammunition.
