Trump Pauses Aid to Ukraine, Hours Later Zelensky Says He’s Ready for Peace

Aid to Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a pause on U.S. military aid to Ukraine on Monday.

The decision came just days after a tense and chaotic White House meeting between Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The meeting, which was livestreamed globally, highlighted growing tensions between the two leaders over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Monday Trump Halts Aid to Ukraine

The decision to withhold aid followed a series of high-level discussions at the White House, where top national security officials debated the impact of continued support for Ukraine.

The halt-in-aid was intended to remain in effect until Trump determined that Zelensky was making a serious commitment to peace negotiations.

Tuesday Zelensky Backs Down After Days of Defiance

Just hours after the aid suspension, Zelensky made a dramatic shift in tone. On Tuesday afternoon, he publicly declared Ukraine’s commitment to peace:

"I would like to reiterate Ukraine’s commitment to peace. None of us wants an endless war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts."

Zelensky went on to outline potential steps toward ending the war, emphasizing a possible truce in the air and sea if Russia agreed to the same conditions:

"We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and truce in the sky—ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure—and truce in the sea immediately, if Russia will do the same. Then we want to move very fast through all next stages and to work with the U.S. to agree on a strong final deal."

Acknowledging the role the United States has played in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, Zelensky also expressed gratitude for past military assistance:

"We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. And we remember the moment when things changed when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins. We are grateful for this."

"Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time and in any convenient format. We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively."

Friday White House Meeting Controversy

The shift in Zelensky’s rhetoric followed a contentious meeting at the White House on Friday, where Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of failing to show enough appreciation for years of American support.

The meeting, initially intended to strengthen ties, quickly devolved into a heated exchange. Zelensky said there was no way to negotiate peace because Putin would not honor it. He also argued that the US Presidents starting with Obama had not done enough to help the embattled Ukraine. Trump also reminded him in his first term he had unilaterally sent Javelin warplanes for Ukraine to use for protection at the Russian border.

Both Trump and Vance criticized Zelensky’s attitude and claimed he was not grateful for the over 150 billion dollars in US aid Ukraine has received.

Trump also insisted that it was counterproductive to bad-mouth Russian Leader Putin before approaching him for Peace talks.

This led to an abrupt cancellation of a scheduled press conference. Shortly after, he was escorted away from the White House, and Trump took to social media to deliver a blunt message: "Come back when you’re ready for peace."

Following the meeting, Zelensky embarked on a diplomatic tour, traveling to Canada and England to rally international support. Before he changed his tone on Tuesday his initial social media responses suggested resistance to peace negotiations.

He also reiterated that he would not relinquish his leadership until Ukraine was accepted into NATO, a prospect that remains a significant point of contention in the conflict. The possibility of Ukraine joining NATO was one of the driving factors behind Russia’s invasion three years ago.

Even if it took Trump cutting aid to Ukraine to get Zelensky committed to Peace it was worth it.
